A Week in Tōhoku: The best of Japan’s North! | Aomori, Yamagata, Morioka

Let’s travel to Japan’s hidden gem of an area: Tohoku! This cluster of prefectures gets visited by less than 2% of the total volume of tourists in the country, and honestly I strongly recommend you become a part of this percentage before the masses learn about everything Tohoku has to offer! We’ve taken JR trains between Yamagata, Aomori and Morioka and learned that this area is absolutely jam packed with culture, stunning nature begging to be hiked upon, photo opportunities, local food specialties and also.. dogs!

For reference, we’ve done this trip at the end of October – as you can tell, autumn and autumn leaves happen much sooner in Tohoku than they do in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka! So if you want to see some stunning foliage but can’t visit Japan towards end of November, that’s another reason to go to Tohoku for ya!

  1. Why do I feel like the commentary is always a complaint disguised as a compliment?

  2. Thanks for this I am doing a road trip around northern Japan this year and this video helped me with some of the planning thanks!

  3. Beautifully shot video and super helpful guide, thank you. 🙂 Your sweaters are so cute!

  4. You know, planned a trip to Tohoku for three weeks and at first, wasn't too excited because it felt 'different' from the classic Japanese experience. I've watched this video twice and can't tell you how thrilled and happy I feel. Through this video, and this is to the camera man as well, you conveyed peaceful vibes. You sent all the right energy. So thank you for the work and hey, for what it's worth, you've earned a new subscriber !

Will make a video myself of the trip, so hey, maybe it will inspire others, like you inspired us!

  5. I had this just running in the background while doing chores but had to rewind and actually sit down and watch it properly. The cinematography is so good.

  6. Thanks for that enjoyable and interesting video. Great photography and soundtracks. Sharla and Chris Broad ? I is surprised. 2 Tubers tubing together ?

  7. My wife and I went up to Mt Hakoda by the cable car. When we disembarked at the top, the wind was howling during late October autumn. We looked around for a minute, took some quick snap-shots and joined the long queue back to the cable car and just in time for the last bus arriving at 4.30 pm. It was already getting dark. I could not imagine being stranded at the foot of the mountain and literally without a soul there for the night. So, those who do not self-drive, please be very aware of the timing of the bus schedule.

  8. Nicely filmed and good music. Too bad it's just an overview of what the region has to offer.

  9. Great video btw! Everything's so pretty 🥰just a question, how much time should be spent at the Nebuta Warasse Museum? I'm thinking of going to Aomori this September!

  10. Amazing video, very informative and great overview of the Tohoku region. I'm actually planning on going on a 14 day trip from Tokyo to Aomori in October next year and taking notes of some of the places you visited as reference.

  11. can you recommend places to stay? I'm excited by what you've shared in this video.
My 2 teenage daughters and I plan to come to these places in mid Dec 2024

  12. For Aomori Prefecture, I really recommend Hirosaki and the surrounding area for the scenery of Mt Iwaki and Hirosaki Castle. ^^

  13. Perfect for me because I am going to spend about a week in that area in mid-october, of this year. I will be arriving from Hokkaido, so aomori will be my starting point.
Would you have a writing description to where you went.
Being french speaking I miss a lot of what you say , but I can read perfecly.
    Domo arigato 🎉

  14. Has to be soba, i like the texture and chewiness of the noodles. Actually visited Azumaya Honten in Morioka, wont forget the taste of their soba dishes.

  15. I love the nature of Aomori; we went Oirase gorge, Towada lake, Hirosaki Castle (Sakura festival), Hotokegaura in Shimokita peninsula. Tanesashi park in Hachinohe.

  16. Beautiful views! We love the Tohoku area of Japan. Aomori is one of my favorites. We didn't make it to Akita, so I'd still like to go there. 🍁Heidi

  17. Might I suggest visiting the onsens around Hanamaki, Iwate. There are many very charming old and new onsens in one small region west of Hanamaki. Osawa Onsen was a favourite of mine while I lived in Kitakami. Tohoku is the best place to be to get a sense of 'old Japan.' Loved your video. Arigato!

  18. I visited Yamagata last Aug. It’s good vibes, amazing people, good foods, great sights. My original plan was also to visit the neighboring prefectures but I ran out of time. In future I will visit the region again. Any recommendation which season is the best to cover the region and how many days are needed?

  19. I think you're supposed to go there in the winter. You're in snow territory.
