Just 20 kilometers from Vatra Dornei lies Ciocănești, a unique gem in Bucovina that feels like stepping into an open-air museum. Known as the “community of carved houses,” this village features over 600 homes adorned with intricate traditional motifs, turning its streets into a vibrant tapestry of Romanian folk art.

The tradition began in 1950 when Leontina, a young bride, decided to decorate her new home. A local painter drew inspiration from the patterns found on Easter eggs and traditional costumes, creating a design that quickly inspired the entire village. Today, these houses are painted in beautiful reds, blacks, greens, and yellows, preserving a cultural heritage unique in Romania and the world.

In 2004, Ciocănești earned the title of Museum-Community, and in 2017 it was named one of Europe’s most colorful tourist destinations. Its charm is complemented by the serene beauty of Bucovina’s landscapes, with rolling hills, snow-draped fields, and traditional rural life creating a storybook setting.

    А вот автомашин, совсем мало почему – то. Запасы древесены огромны, сказали вы. Но ,болит душа , о том, что уничтожаются огромные участки реликтового леса. Мне не срубить и одного маленького деревца. Я бы наверное не смогла там из за этого жить . Газ бы провести, или топить углем. Ведь уничтожается уникальная природа,- такие величественные хвойные леса 😢

    Ich frage mich gerade,ob dieses Dorf bei einem Rundgang im Sommer auch so Zauberhaft aussehen würde? Ich glaube ,der Schnee ,das weiß und der blaue Himmel machen den Zauber , obwohl ich den Sommer mehr liebe, als den Winter . Aber danke für die herrlichen Aufnahmen .❤
