Japan Itinerary: Naoshima Art Island + Okayama #yayoikusama #itinerary #japantravel #travelplanning
Naoshima Art Island in Japan is a must go for art lovers! There are multiple Yayoi Kusama pumpkins on the island and dozens of colorful, unique, and thought-provoking museums and installations. Combine it with a trip to Okayama, which we loved for its black Crow Castle and the beautiful Korakuen gardens, which are one of Japan’s three greatest gardens. The local Chiya beef and oyster oknomiyaki were also delicious. Additional travel tips below ⬇️

Naoshima Island
🏨 You can stay on Naoshima Island but it’s a little expensive. We based ourselves in Okayama
🛥️ Check the ferry schedules to the island; they differ depending on the port and don’t run super frequently
🖼️ There are some museums you will need to reserve time slots for in advance, namely the Chichu Museum and Kinza Art House Project
🎨 There are 8 art houses, which are formerly abandoned houses turned into installations. Each has a different feel ranging from quirky junkyard to glass staircase in a cave
🎫 You can buy tickets to individual Art Houses or a pack that gives you access to all of them
Okayama
🚇 It’s easy to get around by public transport / walking
🐖 Demi glace tonkatsu is the soul food of Okayama
☕ Get the cutest 3D latte art animals at Cafe Filo
𓋛 Try the fruit popsicles at Nico Nico Do
🏯 Okayama Castle is known as Crow Castle for its black exterior
⛩️ Explore Kibitsu Jinja shrine
