The streets of Shinjuku are packed during Hanazono Shrine’s annual festival.
There are many food stalls and festivals around the shrine, but the main event takes place on a Sunday (May 26th in 2024). A large mikoshi (portable shrine) leaves the shrine in the morning (around 10am) and parades down Shinjuku’s main street before returning again at 7:30pm. The type of mikoshi and the route change from year to year.
Hanedaiko is a festival drum that has been passed down only in Choshi since the Edo period.
Two performers carry the drum on their shoulders, support it with their necks and ribs, beat it, bounce it and spin it, and the drum itself flies into the air. The style of carrying one of the bearers in his arms, making him crawl on the ground and beating the drums is very passionate.
