Land of myths: “Izumo and Matsue”
Japan’s most revered spiritual site, “Izumo,” and the profound beauty of Matsue, the “water city.”
This tour will take you back to the ancient origins of Japan.
Kojiki, the oldest chronicle of Japan, mentions Izumo Taisha shrine and identifies it as the annual gathering place of the Shinto gods. With its spiritual history and ancient roots, the shrine attracts more than 2 million worshippers a year. Izumo Taisha’s main hall is now hidden due to Heisei-era renovations. But, the solemn main hall can still be seen here. In addition, our visual tour allows you to explore the old mine shaft of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, designated as a world heritage site in 2007, and the rakan (Buddhist arhat) statues of Rakanji Temple.
In Matsue, located on the opposite shore of Shinjiko Lake, enjoy images of the former residence of Koizumi Yakumo as they evolve during the four seasons of the year. Koizumi Yakumo, the adopted Japanese name of Lafcadio Hearn, is the renown author of such works as the “Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan” and “Kwaidan”. It is said that Hearn loved to gaze at the gardens of his home, which have remained unchanged since the days when he lived there. The tour continues to two other spiritual sites: Matsue castle and Shinjiko Lake. The donjon of Matsue castle is said to be one of the most authentically preserved of the 12 donjons that remain in Japan. Enjoy nature at its most exquisite at Shinjiko Lake, where the sunsets overlooking Yomegashima Island are said to be among the most spectacular sights in all Japan.
