We have lived in Mumbai for a couple of years now and discovered some wonderful places to visit and eat and have made many new friends. Mumbai can be a little overwhelming especially if it’s your first time visiting. But it is an amazing place that millions of people call home – known as the city of dreams.
We start our Mumbai travel guide with a trip on the local train down into Churchgate Station to show you around the Fort area, or Mumbai City. Places like Gateway of India, The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Chhatrapti Shivaji Maharj Terminus (formally known as Victoria Station), Western Railway Building, Oval Maiden, Rajabi Clock Tower, Mani Bhavan (Ghandi’s Cottage and Musuem) and Marine Drive for Sunset.
We show you our life as a foreigner living in Mumbai and the areas we have lived in, like Malad East and Mira Road. We take you to one of our favorite places to eat, at Cafe Bahar, and show you the local markets. We visit Dharavi slums which is the world’s largest slum and turns over a billion dollars a year from the industries and businesses there. It is also the most populated area of Mumbai with over one million people living there. Not far from Dharavi is Dhobi Ghat which is the world’s largest open-air laundry. It’s in the Guiness Book of Records, having nearly 500 dhobi’s washing clothes at the same time.
One thing that everyone associates Mumbai with is that it’s the home of Bollywood. Bollywood Park or Film City is where many movies, tv series and commercials are filmed in India. Here is where you can see some of the biggest stars of Bollywood. We do a tour through the studios and visit some of the sets. It has not been really set up for international tourists as everything is mainly in Hindi.
