Located in the heart of Tokyo, Ueno(上野) is well known for its vibrant food scene, cherry blossoms in the parks, and numerous museums. Ueno Station is also a transportation hub in the city, with several train lines, including the Shinkansen, and is a convenient access point between Narita and Haneda airports. There is a lot to experience in Ueno and the surrounding areas.

Follow the Yamanote Line tracks to neighboring Okachimachi Station and you’ll experience Ameyoko. Ameyoko is a bustling shopping street where you can hear the distinctive calls of market sellers selling everything from clothing, spices, cosmetics, and fresh fish.
Ameyoko’s origins lie in the postwar black market, where stalls sold a variety of goods, from sweets and snacks to military uniforms. Though the 500-meter-long shopping street has grown in size, it still retains a sense of tension and is bustling with shoppers looking to buy fresh food, cosmetics, clothing, jewelry, and more at low prices. The streets are filled with the sounds of energetic vendors competing with each other for quantity and enthusiasm. The market is packed with various specialty shops, such as the Military Shop, which stocks military uniforms and accessories, and the Ameyoko Center Building, which has a wide selection of herbs and spices. Be sure to try Ameyoko’s delicious street food, such as panda-yaki, panda bread, and panda bento, which pay homage to the pandas at Ueno Zoo.
