Attempting To Run 100kms Of The Kumano Kodo – Japan’s Ancient Pilgrimage Trail

I’ve been wanting to trail run on the Kumano Kodo for the longest time so to finally get to do it was such a delight! This was one of my favourite trips we made in the whole year and I can’t believe the kinds of places we got to see. Maybe one day I’ll be back to try the other routes…

Thank you Chris for editing this beast of a video! It was a mountain to climb and he absolutely nailed it. Go follow him on IG at www.instagram.com/kihara_chris

  1. This is my favorite kind of content. Doing hard things, explaining how it works, showing us the view along the way. Had no idea there was hiking insurance in Japan. Also, for some reason (Nachi can probably take credit) I took my family to Wakayama for our first mainland Japan trip, and I am so glad we did. It is a beautiful prefecture!

  2. 70km is no easy feat but then you have the aches and pains and add that you were also filming. Thanks for taking us on the adventure! It was such a joy to watch!

  5. Excellent video and excellent achievement. One day i'll follow your steps albeit much slower. I love Kumano hongu taisha and the Otorii been there twice already. Where was that 4WD campsite? That looks hecka fun

  6. Thank you, Hannah. I’ve long wanted to do an ancient pilgrimage trail and recently fallen for Japan. I now have a route to aim for.

  7. Such a great video. I loved living vicariously through you in this adventure! Thank you for making content like this.

  8. Sooo enjoyed this video! It was like a hero's journey, but more giggly!

Went to part of Kimano Kodo last year with my friend and it was mostly road (possibly even same part you've done?) and then we got lost and were chased by bees (or wasps?). At least the non-roady parts were pretty 😅

  9. After living and raising kids in Tokyo the appeal of "Nothing" cannot be underestimated. Rural Saitama and Chichibu Especially (Nariki kaido) are the best places I've ever lived, Niigata Joetsu a little too nothing. You did well with the weather, That said we always carry our Bear bells, with as much riding we do, we've seen too many bears to not take precautions.

  10. Wow – this is absolutely stunning Hannah and Chris – the most beautiful video you have done to date. I hope you have recovered Hannah. Running and videoing in this terrain is incredibly taxing and the toll on your body would have been quite demanding and potentially damaging. It was a real treat to watch. Many thanks for all your hard work and efforts.

  11. this just popped up on my feed and I am so glad. Planning trip in spring and I run trails so this is a must do and stunning from start to finish. Thank you so much for sharing – Did you purchase the gels and electrolytes in Japan, bring with you or were you able to have them shipped to you. Wondering if I need to bring these with me.

  12. GOSH! What a bEEEEAUTifulll video!
My hiking legs are itching rn! Very inspiring, great editing. Loved it loved it loved it!

Kumano Kodo has been in my bucket list for a while. Thanks to you it's in my top 5 笑笑

  13. Amazing job Hannah! 70km on rugged terrain with varying elevation is not an easy task. Especially filming the whole darn thing! You're awesome!

  14. Beautiful Video.
The interaction on the second day with the other Hiker was so sweet.
The Jeep ride looked like loads of fun.
The entire walk looked absolutely Stunning.

  15. These are some amazingly beautiful shots and I can see that you had tons of fun! Well done!
    Just two things:
    1. There is a mistake in the map at the beginning. The most popular route, the Nakahechi is the pink line at the bottom. What you indicated with the arrow is the Omine Okugakemichi. Just to let you know.
    2. Please treat your body a little better, it was quite painful to watch. 😭 Tape blisters as soon as they start. If you know you have problems with your ancles and knees, carry braces with you or learn how to tape them. Please be careful, we don't want you falling down a mountain.
Otherwise, a great video! Looking forward to more adventures!

  16. Very beautiful and very cool! Will you do something like this again (or have you, in the intervening months?) and if so is there anything you could've improved about your training or are blisters and the occasional ankle roll / knee injury just par for the course for you?

  17. You make me want to do this.

I went to Kyoto last October and run/hiked Arashiyama to Kinkaku ji Temple(via Sawa Pond).
I didnt know the route can extend up to Fushimi Inari(about 42km long total).

  18. oh man, seeing you having that knee pain was giving me some serious ptsd… and not just because i currently have knee pain, hahaha hope all your injuries cleared up without too much trouble! and that is some truly beautiful looking country; the fortunate timing you had as well for the cherry blossoms was just 🤌

  20. Love the running content! I did a hike at Mount Jinba on a foggy day and had similar vibes, so it's good to see that you appreciated the different look

  21. I live in Mie, Japan.
If you come to mie, japan,
you should go to Ise Shrine!
Ise Shrine is the highest rank shrine in japan.

  22. Three things:
    1. When you mentioned previously that you had shot this video, all I could think of was all of those shots you do of you running away from the camera! You are a frikkin rockstar!
    2. Chris should have done a behind the scenes video of what he was up to while you ran.
    3. This whole video was absolutely stunning. The drone shots of the off-roading were SO good! Everything was just so beautifully shot and edited. Thanks for the journey!
