Tokyo seems very livable when it's so convenient getting to the ski resorts. Just came home from two weeks in Japan. First week we took the train from Tokyo to Nagano for skiing, back to Tokyo, then flew to Sapporo. Everything went so smooth — trains and planes were all on time. Carrying all the ski gear and luggage on the metro during rush hour on the other hand….

Gala is great because of the easy access by train from Tokyo, because belongs to the train company JR. Everywhere else in Japan is kind of really hard to get. That being said most of slopes are below 1000m, snow is not the best. I got a Gala season pass just because of the easy access. Now is cheap because the Yen currently is junk, like 7 years ago the one day package was $135, still quite cheap.

Where were you able to buy a roundtrip bullet train ticket and a day ski pass for $65?
Japan was suffering from a lack of snow until February, and now we've had several snow days in March. It is strange, but we have to accept it.
Sadly the combined train/lift pass offer is only for Japanese credit card holders. I tried about 6 UK credit/debit cards and it failed every time. I went to the tourist information office at Tokyo station and they said it’s only for Japanese cards

今から40年以上前初めて東京から新潟にスキーに行った時は夜行列車で一晩かけて行きました。
それから何年も経たずに上越新幹線ができて日帰りで簡単に行けるようになりました。
雪国を走る新幹線の凄さは世界有数の豪雪地帯を走りながらも大雪が降ってもダイヤがほとんど乱れずに時間通りに運行することです。新幹線自体がラッセル車のような役目を果たしています。
利き酒していたのは
越後駅ではなく越後湯沢駅です。
SKI AMERICA という１６㎜映画に影響受け、もう何十年も昔に撮った「SKI TOGAKUSHI」という50分の長編８㎜映画を YouTube にＵＰしたスキー好きな私。長野五輪の前後にはガーラ湯沢など越後湯沢周辺から広大な苗場スキーリゾートの神楽エリアへ年間20回近くも滑りに行った。なので湯沢を知り尽くした私が見た外国人youtuber の湯沢紹介ビデオは完璧に思えた。Gala Yuzawa に石打と湯沢高原スキー場を加えた三山利用チケェットがあることを知っているのは湯沢通ですねっ！
冒頭のスキーの格好をしながら東京駅から列車に乗ってスキーへ出掛けるシーンはジョークに決まっているが、1964年当時の上野駅では当たり前の格好だったことを思い出させてくれた。あの当時のスキー靴は登山靴とそれ程変わりがなかったのでスキーの格好をしたままスキー列車に乗ってスキー場へ向かった。上越は雪質こそ悪いが温泉もあるしニセコや白馬とはまた違った魅力がある、それもスキー場が密集するエリアだ！
電車やバスを利用する際は スキーはバックかケースに入れましょう
これ日本では当然のマナーです

Madaro and Nozawa are workable for day trips from Tokyo too.
About 1 hour 40 minutes from Tokyo station to Iiyama station, then about 20 minute drive.
