Thank you for being here 🙂 In this video, I visited Yusuhara Town, famous for the beautiful architecture designed by Kuma Kengo, one of the most famous architects in Japan whose architecture is identified with the extensive use of wooden materials.
※First part of the video about the meal scene, when explaining the ingredients, the rough eating sounds will be heard. If this bothers you, please feel free to skip the scene.

After leaving the Noyodogawa Cho, I headed to the town, The most recent project by the architect Mr. Kuma in this town is the library called “Kumo-no-Ue Library”. The spacious wooden flooring creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you want to sit down and read a book. Although it doesn’t seem to be in use now, there is a space for bouldering on the first floor. On the second floor, you can freely browse a wide variety of books, making it a place where residents, especially those with children, would visit frequently as there is a room for kids with many picture books. Overall, it was a very comfortable library.

After visiting the Library, I have also visited “Kumo No Ue No Gellary”. This place exhibits videos where Kengo Kuma talks about five architectural projects in Yusuhara Town. You might wonder why there are so many of Kuma’s buildings here. When Kuma was newly independent and had free time after the bubble burst, he visited Yusuhara Town and was impressed by the Yusuhara Theater. This small wooden theater inspired his philosophy of using wood extensively. Kuma even describes this place as his starting point. The gallery itself is a rare “balance beam” type bridge structure, highlighting the aging of wood and exuding a divine presence.

In this video, I also explored the main street of the town, and also visited the aforementioned theater that heavily influenced his architectural philosophy. I have also experienced the farmer’s minshuku, which is a guesthouse run by a farmer which provided great meals by using the great deal of local products. At the later part, I have also visited a very nice coffee stand run by a very nice couple and the owner was very interested in my trike so I let him try driving it 🙂 (I really liked their muffin especially!)

  1. Thanks for another great video, my wife and i really like your trike too, we find your English is quite easy to understand and we really appreciate it.

  2. Thanks for showing the rural side of Japan. I think most Americans think of Japan as wall-to-wall people crowded together as in Tokyo. Japan has a beautiful countryside. Thanks for sharing your travel adventure..

  3. This is becoming the secret world of dreams for me. I know people are too busy to hear that "Oh, here is the mat that goes under the tent" but it is real, and that is ok. Now I start to watch another great presentation! 🙂

  4. In the US, I feel like we don't care about artists or architects in the same way they do in Japan. To look at the tourist information center and library and to talk about the architect who designed it is so beautiful to me. There's a real sense of harmony and respect for the craft. There's a lot of thought, craft, and care that goes into these things as opposed to where I'm from. Art that is acknowledged in the US has to be intended from the get-go- if that makes sense. As an artist it makes me happy to see other artists being respected and acknowledged.

Of course, America is big, and it's different from town to town. I do feel like I see more abundance in the respect of different crafts in Japan. To look at the tourist information center and library and to talk about the architect who designed it is so beautiful to me. Thank you for sharing!

  5. Some words you were hinting at/looking for: alternating, theater, stainless steel. Keep up the good work. I love it.
