🌸 HIKONYAN Patrol! National Treasure Hikone Castle in Cherry Blossom Season | 4K HDR
Hikone Castle, located in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is one of Japan’s national important cultural properties. The castle was originally built in 1603 by Ii Naomasa and was an important stronghold during the Edo period. Hikone Castle is one of the few castles in Japan that still retains its original wooden structure, and its main keep (main tower) has remained largely unrebuilt since its construction, making it an extremely precious historical asset.
The architectural style of Hikone Castle represents the military defense construction techniques of Japan’s Sengoku and Edo periods. The castle’s keep has five stories, featuring a beautiful exterior and a complex interior structure that includes many stairs and small rooms, all designed for effective defense during wartime. Surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls, along with complex gates and a moat system, it demonstrates the advanced defensive techniques of the time.
The castle was not only a military facility but also a center for local politics and culture. The Ii family lived here for nearly 300 years, and Hikone Castle has witnessed many historical events, including stories of Ii Naotora and other famous military commanders. The museum inside the castle now displays many artifacts related to the history of the Ii family and Hikone Castle, such as armor, weapons, and ancient documents. Some artifacts marked as no photography allowed were skipped during the visit.
Adjacent to Hikone Castle, Genkyūen Garden is a typical Edo-period landscape garden, exquisitely designed with meandering streams and a delicate tea house. In spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, it is a prime spot for flower viewing.
During this visit, the cherry blossoms were about 70% in bloom.
