7 Beautiful hikes between TOKYO and KYOTO | My favorite trails in central Japan

Wauw! Last october we went to Japan and we were very lucky to have found some amazing hikes! 😀
I share seven of our favorites in this video 🙂

WHERE TO SLEEP
► Yui-An in (Nagiso, Nakasendo Trail) one of the best places I stayed in all of my travels! LOVE IT!
► Sheena to Ippei (Tokyo) also a great hidden gem!
► Panketo Lodge (Hakuba, northern Alps) great!! We had a new family room in the back which was amazing! (go for the renovated rooms if you can, the older ones are nothing spectacular)
► Minshuku Shimada (Narai, Nakasendo Trail) a Ryokan, very lovely and again amazing people, highly recommended!
► Noad (wakayama, kumano kodo) only recommended if you have a car cause it’s very out of the way, but lovely and quiet and (in a good way) kind of funky. Loved it! NOTE: you’ll rent a whole house and will not have a host around.

TIMESTAMPS
00:00 Intro
02:04 Nakasendo Trail
05:06 Kamikochi
06:35 Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest
08:52 Tsugaike
10:30 Norikura Kogen
11:45 Kumano Kodo
13:25 Koyasan

NOTE: the mentioned hike with the waterfall is in the south of the Kii Peninsula – is the hike to the Kuwanoki Falls. It’s a clear path which is slightly challenging when it rained (and you might get dirty hands from grabbing rocks). It’s not a long hike tho 🙂

  1. Welcome back, Gretl! Just went back from our Japan trip! I love Nagano too 😍 love, from PH

  2. What??? How have you been? Awesome to see you back!!! Hope all is well, look forward to seeing more, and take care. 🙂🤘👍

  3. It's past 3 AM now in the Philippines, and suddenly I thought about your channel. It crossed my mind if you had short videos before, and that's when I stumbled upon your latest vlog. I'm surprised because after a long time of absence, you're back! Sorry, but you know what, I kind of thought that COVID got you. Yeah, honestly, I did! But it turns out I was wrong. Great to see you again in this latest vlog. More to come! 🙂🙏

  4. Prachtige opnames, vind het ondanks dat grootste deel voorzien is van voice-over tóch mooi om naar te kijken. Heb hiervoor de video bekeken over "7 lessen die ik leerde van mijn laastste reisvideo.

  5. curly hair, “let’s explore!”. i miss those and oh, port barton. i like your narration.

  7. How did you travel around Japan to get to all these hikes please? Did you hire a car?

  8. Omg! You're back! I thought you died because of COVID. I even sent a message to your Instagram account to check on you.

It's so nice to watch your videos again. Travel Gretl is one of my favorite channels.

  9. Oh wow, I didn't know that you had an upload 3 months ago. We miss you here in Philippines, please come back. 🙂

  10. Japan is so beautiful, because it people, the Japanese, respect their cultures and their country, not trashing beautiful places or live irresponsibly/entitled like the people in the USA! Everywhere you go in the USA is a ripoff opportunity with fine prints by the businesses, especially now, with low quality and high prices. This is why, as an American, I travel to Japan exclusively, not bothering to the travel the USA. There is so much to explore Japan!

  11. Hallo Gretl, ik was vaak in Japan voor mijn werk, maar zo mooi had ik het nog niet gezien. Mooie plaatjes 🙂

  12. Gretje can you please list out all the locations you mentioned, it’s a little hard to catch them as you say them. 🙏🏼
