古代より文化と交易の中心地であった蘇州。水路網が整備され、「水の都」や「東洋のベニス」とも称される。だがその歴史はベニスより遥かに長い。水運が蘇州の経済を大いに繁栄させ、ヒトモノカネをこの地にもたらした。絹織物などの工芸品が発達し、多くの詩人や画家、文人が集まった。中国の庭園文化を代表する古典庭園も数多く、その独特なデザインと美しさが知られている。そうした伝統が観光客を引きつける一方、蘇州は近現代を通して経済発展を続け、蘇州を中心とした江蘇省は中国でトップレベルの経済力を誇っている。四季に合わせた意匠を凝らした食文化も発達した。

Suzhou has been a center of culture and trade since ancient times. With its well-developed waterway network, it is also known as the “City of Water” and the “Venice of the East.” But its history is much longer than Venice. Water transportation greatly prospered Suzhou’s economy and brought money to the area. Crafts such as silk textiles developed, and many poets, painters, and literary figures gathered there. There are many classical gardens that represent Chinese garden culture, and they are known for their unique designs and beauty. While these traditions attract tourists, Suzhou has continued to develop economically throughout the modern period, and Jiangsu Province, with Suzhou as its center, boasts one of the top economic powers in China. A food culture that incorporates seasonal elements has also developed.
