Shinjuku Jusansha Kumano Shrine, adjacent to Central Park, is located in the heart of Shinjuku, but its grounds are surrounded by nature, making it a shrine that will help you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.The Shinjuku Jusansha Kumano Shrine Annual Festival is held on the third Saturday and Sunday of September every year. This year it will be held on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd, and both days will be crowded with many people as outdoor stalls are lined up.The evening of the festival is held on the 21st, and the annual festival begins, and the main festival ceremony will be held the following day, the 22nd, from 11:30. On the 22nd, a joint portable shrine procession will be held in the Tsunohara and Yodobashi districts, and the sight of several portable shrines lined up is a spectacular sight.The portable shrine of Kumano Shrine is characterized by an unusual way of carrying it called “Chidori Katsugi.”
With this unique way of carrying the hanabou, rather than placing it on the shoulder, it is held behind the neck and supported with both hands, and the bearers move forward with a shuffling gait and quick stomps.
The sound is also not made by flutes or wooden clappers, but by the rhythm of a metal percussion instrument called a “chanchiki,” and they move forward while shouting “choisa, hoisa.”
