牛島是位於光市室積港東南方約8.4公里處的瀨戶內海的島嶼。

據說該島的名字來自平安時代，當時人們在島上放牧牛，稱為“柿島牛之卷”，因此被稱為“牛島”。也許正是因為這個原因，島上才留下了幾個與牛有關的民間故事。

該島自然環境得天獨厚，全島已被指定為野生動物特別保護區，因為這裡是日本褐鴿在瀨戶內海的唯一棲息地，而這些鴿子主要生長在南部木源寺聚居地被縣指定為天然紀念物。

Ushima is located in the Seto Inland Sea, about 8.4 km southeast of Murozumi Port in Hikari City.

The name of the island is said to have come from the fact that during the Heian period, cows were grazing on Kakishima Cow Pasture, and so it came to be called “Cow Island.” Perhaps for this reason, there are several folk tales related to cows on the island.

The island is rich in nature, and as the only habitat for wood pigeons in the Seto Inland Sea, the entire island has been designated a Special Wildlife Protection Area, and the Mokugenji tree colony, which grows mainly on the southern side of the island, has been designated a prefectural natural monument.

光市室積港から南東約8.4キロメートルの瀬戸内海海上にある島です。

島の名の由来は、平安時代に垣島牛牧(かきしまのうしのまき)として牛が放牧されていたことから「牛島」と呼ぶようになったといわれています。このためか島内には牛に関連した民話がいくつか残されています。

島内には、豊かな自然が残されており、瀬戸内海では唯一のカラスバトの生息地として、島の全域が鳥獣保護区特別保護地区に指定されるとともに、島の南側を中心に生育しているモクゲンジ群生地は県の天然記念物に指定されています。
