I visited Wakayama on a day trip from Osaka during Sakura season. The courtyard of Wakayama Castle was full of people having a hanami, and it was so fun to see all of the vendors and music outside of the castle.
I understand that Wakayama is less traveled by Americans (and foreigners in general), but it is absolutely worth a stop if you're basing out of Osaka/Nara/Kyoto.
