The Narimasu Awa Odori Festival began in 1983 to commemorate the opening of the Yurakucho Line between Ikebukuro Station and Tokyo Metro Narimasu Station (now Narimasu Station on the Toei Subway).
Counted as one of the three major festivals in Itabashi, it is a seasonal feature of the summer in Narimasu. Food stalls are also set up, and the festival is usually crowded with around 35,000 people. A total of 13 groups of around 500 dancers participate, including groups invited from Shibuya and Koenji, as well as the local Narimasu. They parade through the venue, Narimasu Skip Village and Narimasu Shopping Street, shouting “Yattosa!”. A ring dance is held on the stage in the square in front of the Act Hall at the north exit of Narimasu Station on the Tobu Tojo Line. At one point, the audience joins in, and the entire venue is filled with excitement and a sense of unity.
