About Guided Tours to Xingmeng Mongol Ethnic Town

Welcome to Xingmeng Mongol Ethnic Town (兴蒙蒙古族乡), nestled beneath the majestic Fenghuang (Phoenix) Mountain in Tonghai County (通海县). As the sole dwelling area of the Mongol minority in Yunnan Province, this town boasts a rich history spanning over a thousand years, showcasing a distinctive ethnic culture. Renowned as the “Mongolia in South Plateau,” “Home of Songs and Dances,” “Home of Architecture,” and “Home of Muskmelon,” Xingmeng stands as a captivating destination. Through initiatives like the “Mongols on the Southern Plateau” campaign, ongoing enhancements to scenic spots, and comprehensive facilities, Xingmeng has evolved into a premier tourism zone, offering opportunities for sightseeing, recreation, holidays, and immersive experiences in minority ethnic culture.

What Makes Xingmeng Mongolian Village Special?

Upon arriving in the village, your eyes will be drawn to a striking cavalry statue accompanied by Chinese and Mongolian introductions. Xingmeng village, situated among the Mongolian villages in Tonghai, serves as the primary residence for most Mongolians in Yunnan Province. With a population of 5,500 residents, 5,400 are Mongolians, making Tonghai the largest Mongolian community in Yunnan.

Xingmeng Mongolian Village, located in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, houses the largest Mongol community in the region. Unlike the Mongols in the northern regions, the community engages in farming, yet they proudly wear traditional Mongolian costumes and celebrate festivals such as Nadamu Festival (那达慕节), Luban Festival (鲁班节), and others. The village’s centerpiece is the Sansheng Temple (三圣宫), built to honor Kublai Khan and Genghis Khan, revered military leaders in Mongol culture. Surrounding the village are nearly 20 tourist attractions, including Taojiazui (桃家嘴) Xiaohaitan (小海潭) Pond Scenic Area, the Architecture Museum, Sanjiao Temple, Home of Songs and Dances, Muskmelon Garden, and the Jiaoyiwan (交谊湾) Ethnic Culture Garden.

History of Xingmeng Mongol Ethnic Town

Despite being distant from traditional Mongolian territories, Yunnan has emerged as a surprising home to Mongolian communities. Approximately 750 years ago, the cavalry led by Kublai Khan conquered the Dali Kingdom and continued their northern expedition against the South Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Some of these soldiers chose to settle in Tonghai County, Yuxi City, located 130 kilometers from Kunming, becoming the founding inhabitants of this unique and historically rich region.

  1. Interesting to see a mini Mongolian village in Yunnan (I usually see Mongolians obviously in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang Qinghai and parts of Liaoning and Hebei) but I didn't imagine seeing descendants of the Yuan empire in Yunnan, very good content
