“Eisa” is a traditional Okinawan event that gets the blood boiling with soul-stirring, heroic shouts.
22 groups will perform Eisa on the streets of Shinjuku Station, east and west, including Kabukicho and the West Exit, with the main venue being Shinjuku Boulevard.

What is “Eisa”?
Eisa is a Buddhist chanting dance that is performed on the last day of Obon (July 15th of the lunar calendar) to send ancestors off to the afterlife. Obon in Okinawa is held for three days from July 13th to July 15th of the lunar calendar, and Obon is a very important event in Okinawa, where ancestor worship is strong. On the 13th, “Unkei (welcoming)” is when the Buddhist altar is cleaned and offerings are prepared to welcome the ancestors. During Obon, people offer three meals to the Buddhist altar and light incense, and visit the homes of relatives who have Buddhist altars. On the night of the 15th, the last day of Obon, called “Ukui (sending off),” families and relatives offer food to see off their ancestors. Eisa is then danced lively all over the country to see off the ancestors.
