The Mitama Matsuri, which began in 1947 in honor of ancient Japanese beliefs, is now a beloved Tokyo summer tradition, attracting many worshippers every year.
During the festival, over 30,000 lanterns of all sizes are hung in the precincts, as well as hanging lanterns with calligraphy by dignitaries from all walks of life, beautifully coloring the night sky of Kudan, and a ritual to comfort the divine spirits is held every night in the main hall. In addition, there are dedication events such as mikoshi dances, Aomori Nebuta, special flower offering exhibitions, and various performing arts, as well as Bon Odori dances held on the approach to the shrine, all wrapped in light, conveying the nostalgic atmosphere of summer.
