一日乗車券で巡る京都市バスの旅 番外編 京都歴史探訪10 錦天満宮
Pilgrimage to Sugawara no Michizane’s 25 sacred sites. This is a custom of visiting 25 venerable Tenmangu shrines from Kyoto to Dazaifu that enshrine Sugawara no Michizane. It was originally invented as a type of sugoroku in the early Meiji period. There are five shrines in Kyoto City and one in neighboring Nagaokakyo City. The first one is Sugawara-in Tenmangu Shrine. This is the birthplace of Michizane. We talked about Michizane’s life in our previous Kyoto History Tour: Suika Tenmangu Shrine. I will put a link in the summary section, so if you are interested, please take a look. And the last one, number 25, is Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, affectionately known as Kitano-san and loved by the people of the Kyoto, is the heart of Tenmangu Shrines. And the second shrine is Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, which is the stage for this time. Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine is located at the eastern end of Nishiki-koji, where Nishiki Market, Kyoto’s kitchen, is located. Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine is located right in the middle of Kyoto’s downtown area. Supported by the passionate faith of the people around us, we have reached our current status. Sugawara-in, the birthplace of Michizane, became a temple called Kankiji after his death. Later, Kankiji Temple received a donation of temple land at the site of Rokujo Kawara-in Temple and changed its name to Kankikoji Temple and relocated. On this occasion, Tenman Daijizai Tenjin was enshrined within the shrine grounds, which marked the beginning of Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. Incidentally, Rokujo Kawara-in was the residence of Minamoto no Toru, the model for Hikaru Genji in the Tale of Genji. Currently, part of Rokujo Kawara-in is the Shosei-en garden, an outer garden of Higashi Honganji Temple. In 1587, 288 years after the founding of Kankikoji Temple, as part of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Kyoto Redevelopment Plan, the temple was ordered to be moved to its current location in Nishiki-koji-Teramachi. At this time, the shrine dedicated to Tenman Daijizai Tenjin became Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. During the Edo period, Kankikoji Temple and Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine prospered, attracting the faith of people from the capital. Later, in 1872, the Shinto-Buddhist separation order was enacted and the shrine became independent. Kankikoji Temple moved to Higashiyama Gojo and then to Yamashina, leaving behind Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine. At the same time, part of the precincts was provided for the opening of Shinkyogoku-dori. A remnant of this can be seen in the torii gate between Teramachi Street and Shinkyogoku Street. If you look closely, you will see that the torii gate’s top beam and wooden lintels are embedded into the buildings on either side. When designing the buildings on both sides, the width of the torii gate was designed to be the same as the width of the road. However, the width of the torii gate was wider than the road! I thought it was a redesign of the building, but the building was constructed as is (^◇^;). This led to the birth of this rare landscape. This scenery was featured on the NHK TV program "Buratamori" and quickly became a famous spot. Now, what is happening to this sunken edge of the torii gate? Currently, both sides are used as shops by the Fortune Telling House Senrigan, and the tip of the kasagi is introduced inside the shop as a power spot. Within the grounds, there are many eye-catching items, such as the cattle statues that are a must-see at Tenmangu Shrine, the famous spring water "Nishiki no Mizu," the mechanical fortune-telling slips, and the "kamishibai robot." In particular, the "karakuri fortune-telling slips" and "paper theater robot" were apparently handmade by the chief priest himself. Inheriting tradition while also incorporating new things. Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine can truly be called Kyoto itself. We hope that it will continue to watch over this prosperity as the downtown area’s only guardian shrine. This is access from Kyoto Station. Take the 5/105 bus from Kyoto Station Karasumaguchi A1 bus stop. From A2 bus stop, take the 4/7/205 bus. Get off at Shijo Kawaramachi. It’s about a 5-minute walk.
