Japan’s largest morning glory market, where you can feel the arrival of early summer in the downtown area. 120 morning glory businesses and 100 outdoor stalls and festivals are lined up in a narrow space on Kototoi-dori.
The Iriya Morning Glory Festival, said to be the largest morning glory market in Japan, is held for three days every year from July 6th to 8th at Iriya Kishimojin (Shingenji Temple) in Taito Ward, known as the “Fear Iriya Kishimojin,” and Kototoi-dori in front of it.
Iriya’s morning glories became famous when a dozen or so nurseries began to make them around the Bunka and Bunsei eras at the end of the Edo period. It was abolished once in the early Taisho period, but was revived in 1948 by local volunteers and the Shitaya Tourism Federation, and is now bustling with 400,000 people every year.
At the venue, 120 morning glory businesses and 100 outdoor stalls and festivals are lined up, and about 250,000 pots of morning glories are sold over the three days. It is a seasonal event that feels the arrival of early summer in the downtown area.
