I took a walk in Machida, Tokyo.
Machida City is the second most populous city in Tokyo Prefecture after Hachioji City, excluding the 23 special wards of Tokyo. It serves as a central city for the South Tama region and the central area of Kanagawa Prefecture. Machida shares its living and economic sphere with Sagamihara City and Hachioji City. These three cities have also been selected for collaborative efforts under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ “Promotion of Diverse Wide-Area Cooperation” project.

Machida Station, where the Odakyu Line and JR Yokohama Line intersect, boasts the highest number of users among all stations in the Tama region. The area surrounding the station has developed into one of the metropolitan area’s major commercial centers and bustling districts, featuring large-scale commercial facilities such as department stores and fashion buildings, as well as numerous restaurants. Due to its vibrancy and concentration of youth-oriented commercial facilities, the area around Machida Station is sometimes colloquially referred to as the “Shibuya of the West.”

While Machida has developed as a bedroom community for Tokyo since the 1960s, agriculture is still practiced in various parts of the city. Following the bubble economy period, there has been an influx of private universities relocating from central Tokyo to Machida. Currently, the city is home to several private universities and integrated schools, contributing to its character as a “city of youth.”
