Tarama Island is a good old Okinawan island, and of course you can enjoy life on the island, but it’s also a blessed environment, so today let’s take a look around, and see what kind of crops they grow! Now, before we go around this wonderful, idyllic Tarama Island, there’s a place I’d like to introduce to you Christal! Whar!? Have you ever been here before Vincent? Nope, never, but I’ve done my research, and found an intersting connection with the two of us, so decided to come here first. Actually, as you can see, the ocean here is really shallow, and in 1857, there was a Dutch merchant ship called the Van Bosse, which actually ran aground over there and sank. Though, the 27 sailors on board, some from the Netherlands and others from Europe, all survived, were evacuated, and are said to have stayed on Tarama Island for a while, before going back home. So in the 19th century, there were already foreigners, like us who came to Tarama Island, what made me feel a connection. So today while discovering many things about Tarama, I’d love to see the sceneries they also saw back then! – It feels like history! – It does! Kind of a connection! Like our seniors! – But way far senior! Also the Chinese potteries that were on the ship at that time, as well as the ship’s anchor, are still preserved on Tarama Island, – so I think it’s a truly valuable piece of history! – Yeah, great! – Well then, let’s go see the village! – Let’s go see it! The population of Tarama is approximately of 1 000, many of whom are gathered around the village. The settlements, once scattered throughout the island, gathered in the 16th c. slightly north of the center of the island. With its beautiful townscape and stone walls reminiscent of Okinawa it was the first place in Okinawa to be registered as a member of "Japan’s Most Beautiful Villages" in 2010. However, the entire island being flat, it is directly affected by typhoons and exposed to a harsh natural environment, so, many trees such as Fukugi have been planted around the village.
