現在の「吾妻子滝(あづまこのたき)」別名「東子の滝」は、平安時代末期まで「千尋の滝」と呼ばれており、江戸時代の書物「芸備諸村瀑布図」や「芸藩通志」に描かれ、「菖蒲前」伝説でも知られています。
伝説によると平安時代末期の治承4年(1180年)、平家に叛旗を翻した源頼政(みなもとのよりまさ)は平家の追討により宇治橋の戦いで敗れたため、宇治の平等院で自害しました。
残された源頼政の側室であった菖蒲前(あやめのまえ)は、平家の追手を恐れ、頼政の遺児である種若丸(たねわかまる)と家来の猪早太(いのはやた)と共に身を隠せる場所を求めて西国へ向います。
そして、安芸国賀茂郡西条郷の千尋の滝に辿り着き、岩屋に身を隠しましたが、幼子の種若丸は、長旅の疲れで病気になり、まもなく病死してしまいます。
菖蒲前が滝のそばに我が子を埋葬した後、悲嘆に暮れながら『吾妻子や 千尋の滝のあればこそ 広き野原の末をみるらん』と手向けの和歌を詠んだとされており、その事からこの滝は「吾妻子の滝(東子の滝)」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられています。
現在は吾妻子滝公園として整備されており、休憩所、小さな水車や小屋などが併設され、滝の西側にある吾妻子観音堂の中には、種若丸の墓と伝えられる宝篋印塔(ほうきょういんとう)が安置されています。

According to legend, in the 4th year of Jisho (1180) at the end of the Heian period, Minamoto no Yorimasa who rebelled against the Heike clan was defeated at the Battle of Ujibashi in pursuit of the Heike clan, so he committed suicide at Byodoin
Ayame no Mae, Minamoto no Yorimasa’s remaining concubine, was afraid of being pursued by the Heike family, so she headed to the western country in search of a place to hide with Yorimasa’s orphaned son, Tanewakamaru, and his servant, Inohayata.
They arrived at Chihiro Falls in Saijo-go, Kamo-gun, Aki Province and hid themselves in a rocky cave, but the young Tanewakamaru fell ill from the fatigue of the long journey and died soon after.
It is said that after Shobumae buried his child near a waterfall, he composed a waka poem written in a heartbroken manner, saying, “Only with Azumako and Chihiro Falls can I see the end of the vast fields.” It is said that because of this, this waterfall came to be called “Azumako Falls”.
Currently, it is maintained as Azumako Falls Park, and there is a rest area, a small water wheel, a hut, etc. Inside the Azumako Kannon-do Hall on the west side of the waterfall, there is a Hokyointo that is said to be the grave of Tanewakamaru is enshrined here.
