Tateno Dam (under construction) Tateno, Minamiaso Village, Aso District Minamiaso Railway / Tateno Dam construction site Description of Tateno Dam. Tateno Dam is a dam under construction on the Shira River, a class A river that flows through Kumamoto Prefecture. This facility was positioned in the river improvement plan as a dedicated dam for flood control in the Shira River basin. The purpose of this dam is to reduce the peak flood flow of the Shira River and further delay the peak time of the flood, allowing time for evacuation. The dam type is gravity concrete with a height of 90m, a crest length of 200m, a volume of 400,000 m3, and a total water storage capacity of approximately 10.1 million m3. The project began in 1983 (Showa 58), and the groundbreaking ceremony for the dam body was held in August 2018 (Heisei 30), and as of 2021, it is currently under construction. *The video is a re-edited version. The dam is already in operation. I learned that the Minamiaso Railway’s "Daiichi Shirakawa Bridge" would be rebuilt, so I came to film the bridge that served us for about 90 years from 1927 until the Kumamoto Earthquake (2016). However, the old iron bridge had already been removed and there was no trace left. It is very disappointing. I thought about it again, and had researched in advance that there was a Tateno Dam under construction nearby, so I changed my purpose to photographing the construction site from a distance. Aso Choyo Bridge Shira River / Kuro River Daiichi Shirakawa Bridge (under construction) Previously, there used to be an old-fashioned iron bridge where the trolley trains of the Minami Aso Railway ran here. It seems you were a little late. It looks like a temporary bridge used exclusively for dam construction. Driftwood capture facility / Tateno Dam construction site This is the Tateno Dam construction site. Construction has just begun, so it’s hard to imagine what kind of dam it will be. So, I made an image diagram. It will look like this. Since it is a dam dedicated to flood control, water flows downstream during normal times. In the event of an abnormality, the difference between the amount of water flowing in and the amount of water being released is stored in the dam to control floods. Aso Choyo Bridge New Aso Big Bridge The images of bridges that collapsed during the Kumamoto Earthquake are still fresh in our minds. The new Aso Big Bridge is a replacement of the Aso Ohashi Bridge. It has finally opened to traffic approximately five years after the 2016 earthquake. Aso Tokyu Golf Club Recovery and reconstruction efforts following the Kumamoto earthquake are progressing steadily. Even so, it’s quite a tall and long bridge, so it’s scary to cross.
