Rhododendron Park Eshiro, Mizukami Village, Kuma District Description of Rhododendron Park. Mizukami Village, Kuma District, is located deep in the central mountains of Kyushu, on the border with Miyazaki Prefecture, and is a small village with a population of approximately 2,000 people. In addition to agricultural products such as bamboo shoots, tea, chestnuts, and strawberries that are grown in the great outdoors, this region’s specialty products include delicious rice produced from the spring water of Mt. Ichifusa. It is also a spot where you can enjoy nature in all four seasons, with rhododendrons in the spring, fresh greenery in the summer, and autumn leaves in the fall. This time, I visited Rhododendron Park in the Eshiro district of Mizukami Village to see the beautiful rhododendrons, which are also the village flowers. This park is located within Shiramizu Forest Nature Park, which I introduced a long time ago, and is approximately 900m above sea level. Rhododendrons are plants that often bloom deep in the mountains at high altitudes, and they grow naturally in areas that are not affected by temperature. The park was created in 1982, and Western rhododendrons have been added to the originally wild ones, with a total of about 3,000 rhododendrons planted. Pale pink flowers bloom from late April to early May every year. The annual Rhododendron Festival is held in conjunction with the flowering. Today I’m visiting Rhododendron Park in Eshiro, Mizukami Village, Kuma District. I came to see the beautiful rhododendrons because I thought it was around the time they were blooming. The flowers are at their best from late April to early May. Enjoy with us today. This is actually my first time seeing a rhododendron. I imagined it to be a shrub since it belongs to the Ericaceae family. However, the rhododendrons here are bigger than I imagined. The flowers resemble azaleas, but are very beautiful and gorgeous. Please enjoy it along with local audio. This stream is natural. It probably originally grew wild around this stream. The flow of a natural stream is truly soothing. I think it’s quite large for a park that only has rhododendrons. This is a little-known spot even within Kumamoto Prefecture. The best time to see them may be around April 30th.
