小芝島は、無人島で国立公園に指定されており、潮が引いている時間帯に大芝島等の高い位置から眺めると島の形がハート形に見える事からハート島と呼ばれるようになりました。
江戸時代にはのろしをあげて次に火をわたした火建山（ほたてやま）として長崎奉行などの役人の御用船や朝鮮通信使の船が渡るときなどに合図の火を通したとされています。

Koshibajima is an uninhabited island designated as a national park. When viewed from Oshibajima and other islands during low tide, the island looks heart-shaped, hence the nickname Heart Island.
During the Edo period, it was known as Hotateyama, where a signal fire was lit and then passed on when government ships such as the Nagasaki magistrate and Korean envoys crossed the island.
