#106 71系統 4 平安京唯一の現存遺構 東寺
Kyoto City Bus Trip with a One-Day Pass.
This time, we will be delivering the main story, “Journey of the 71 System.”
71 System goes east on Shijo-dori from Matsuobashi Bridge.
Turn right at Shijo Omiya and go south on Omiya Street.
Turn left at Kujo Omiya.
Return to Kujo Garage from Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit via Kujo Garage.
After touring the footprints of the Shinsengumi in the Mibu area,
we boarded the special 71 System from the Mibu-deramichi bus stop and
headed to our next stop, Toji Temple.
The main story has been absent for a long time.
The video is also from the Kyoto heavy snowfall in January last year.
Shijo Street from the bus window is also snowy.
”A video from a year ago won’t cut it,” so
we’ll include some footage from our visit to Toji Temple in the fall.
Passing by Umekoji Park
When you cross the JR overpass,
Get off at the bus stop "Toji Higashimon-mae".
This is the location of bus stops around Toji Temple.
Toji Nishimon-mae
Toji Minamimon
Kujo Omiya
And in front of the east gate of Toji Temple, the bus stop where I got off this time.
There are a total of 4 bus stops.
The shooting date is January 25, 2023.
This day was the first heavy snowfall in several years.
The place we visited this time was Toji, a government temple built during the Heian capital transfer.
There were two official temples built during the construction of Heiankyo: Toji Temple and Saiji Temple.
Currently, Saiji Temple has disappeared, and only Toji Temple remains.
Enter Toji Temple from the east gate.
Please enjoy the snowy scenery of Toji Temple grounds.
The buildings within the precincts have been destroyed by fire many times,
and have been rebuilt each time.
Many of them were rebuilt during the Edo period
through the efforts of the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
This five-storied pagoda is one of them.
The width of the eaves from the first to the fifth story is almost the same.
This is a characteristic of the five-storied pagoda that was rebuilt during the Edo period.
The five-storied pagoda at Omuro Ninnaji Temple, which was rebuilt around the same time,
also has the same characteristics.
Incidentally, this five-storied pagoda was also rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu.
Toji Temple is the only facility that has not moved since the Heian capital was moved.
As mentioned above, there are no buildings left from when the capital was moved in the Heian period,
but its foundation has not been moved since its founding.
Using this foundation as a starting point,
the estimated locations of many facilities in Heiankyo were derived.
The location has been confirmed through excavations.
The estimated location of Rashomon gate, the main entrance to Heiankyo,
was also determined by measuring from the base of the south gate of Toji Temple.
Toji Temple can be said to be a living witness to the founding of Heiankyo.
Surveying nails are hammered into the pillars of this southern gate.
This is from the summer of 44 years ago,
when we conducted a survey of buildings in the temple grounds starting from this southern gate.
For me, who participated in this survey as a member of the survey team at the time,
these surveying nails are very nostalgic.
Lastly, I would like you to take a look at the illumination from last fall.
We plan to take a closer look at this event at a later date in the ”Kyoto Night Walk.”
Stay tuned.
Route 71 will then go from Kujo Omiya to Kujo Garage.
Then, return to Kujo Garage via Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit.
The 74th journey
ends at Toji Temple, the ”one-of-a-kind ruins of Heiankyo.”

西寺が残っていないのは残念です 羅城門跡もみてみたいです その当時の都の中心線は今と比べると随分と西側にあったのですね
