大島大橋 Oshima Bridge
hello and welcome to another
video now if you’ve been watching my
previous videos you may remember that in
Autumn of last year I paid a visit to
this station or bakei
station only a few minutes walk from the
station is the osima bridge which links
orima an island to the mainland
from the bridge there are some good
views of the Railway but also some very
beautiful views further out over the
Inland
sea despite this when I visited obatake
last Autumn I didn’t bother going up
onto the bridge well today I’m going to
remedy
that from the station it’s about a
10minute 15minute walk up to the bridge
and and you can take the main road but
it’s much faster I think to take these
back
roads you go through the tunnel under
the main approach road to the
bridge like
this and then after the tunnel you start
to climb up to the level of the bridge
itself there’s another tunnel once again
under the main road to the bridge
and then comes the really steep part I
mean really
steep I think you can see how my Pace
slows right down just here it is quite
remarkably steep quite breathtakingly
Steep and I mean that in the literal
sense but it’s only a short stretch
maybe 100 m at
most and then you join the main road
which is basically at the same level as
the bridge so by this point that’s the
hard work
done and it’s just basically nothing
more than a gental stroll to the bridge
itself just before you get onto the
bridge there’s quite an interesting sign
well I suppose it’s interesting anyway
it says if you see any monkeys please
call the town office so I am assuming
there’s some sort of monkey problem in
these
parts I suppose it is rural enough for
there to be
[Music]
monkeys anyway once you get onto the
bridge you can see the Jr Sanel line
snaking its way around the coast
this direction is looking back towards
Iwakuni I’m pretty sure that the last
time I came up onto the bridge which
come to think of it must be several
years ago now there were still two
passenger trains an hour in each
Direction however now services West of
Iwakuni so including this stretch have
been cut back to basically one train an
hour for for most of the day I’m sort of
hoping there’ll be some
Freight ah here’s a freight train now in
fact this one caught me a little bit by
surprise I have to
say still I suppose it’s a pleasant
enough bonus
before the real reason that I came to
obatake today and walked all the way up
onto the
bridge in actual fact there’s a special
train on this line today and I thought
it might be quite nice to take some
video of it from up here on the
bridge the training question is the
Twilight Express mizuk
kazet this is JR West’s luxury Cruise
train it’s basically a moving hotel
which links Kyoto and
shimonoseki taking two days to make the
journey
you sleep and dine on the train and it’s
all very
gorgeous and this is the train now in
fact it’s
traveling especially slowly because this
is a particularly Scenic part of the
sanor
Line Traveling at the speed it’s doing
gives the passengers time to take in the
views by the way the the yellow train is
a normal passenger train heading back
towards
Iwakuni I speak about the Twilight
Express as though I have deep intimate
knowledge of it all I can say is well
chance would be a fine
thing it is a luxury train and the
prices very much
match for a journey of 3 days and two
nights with two people sharing a suite
room the price is a whopping 1, 370,000
Yen
each as of today that works out at just
under £7,200
per
person if anyone happened to be willing
to pay for me to take that journey I
would be more than happy to do so but I
can’t see me paying for that myself
anytime in the near
future anyway with the Twilight Express
mizaz having passed
obatake in a way that’s the main event
of the day over I
suppose so let’s take a look out over
the Inland
sea as I said earlier the view from the
bridge is really quite spectacular
not just here in obatake but almost
anywhere in the Inland sea the landscape
or should I say
Seascape is one of
placid calm blue
Seas with the numerous
Islands ranged against each other in the
background getting mistier and mistier
as they get further
away it’s scenery that I could never
ever get tired
[Music]
of anyway let’s get back to some train
spotting here’s a local passenger train
from Iwakuni heading towards either
shinyi or
shimoni it’s difficult to read the
destination blinds from here
[Music]
unfortunately and another freight train
heading towards Iwakuni and in the
direction of
Hiroshima obviously through the magic of
video editing you’re missing out all of
the time when there are no
trains it seems that there’s two or
three freight trains an hour in addition
to the two passenger trains one in each
Direction per hour so I suppose there’s
a fair amount of traffic Plus
there’s all the activity on the
[Music]
sea here’s yet another freight
train I have to say I’m quite surprised
at how much Freight there is on the
sanor line in this
area my impression from when I’ve been
up onto this bridge before is that
freight trains were actually quite rare
on this section of line
I wonder if it’s that there are more
trains because it’s a Sunday I’m not
sure anyway I’m not going to be
complaining at this volume of
[Music]
traffic and another freight train
again as I say passenger Services have
been cut back to one train in each
Direction per hour but the freight seems
to be
flourishing I don’t suppose it’s
completely impossible to imagine a time
in the future when passenger services on
this section of the sanor line are
paired back to only serve the major
towns and
cities and the line itself becomes
essentially primarily a freight
line as someone who enjoys the journey
west of Iwakuni on the Sano line I
couldn’t really support that but in
terms of economics I could see that it
could make
sense anyway enough about freight trains
here’s a passenger train heading towards
Iwakuni the yellow livery of the local
trains in the Yamaguchi Hiroshima orok
Kay area is supposed to represent the
area of the Seto Nik the Seto inan
C personally I would have said blue
would have been a better color to
represent the setto in Lan but I don’t
get to make the decisions at Jr more the
pity as I said in my previous orake
video with the opening of the bridge to
orima Island the island you can see here
the fairies from or batake to the island
were
abolished but it’s good to see that
there are still some fairies in this
part of the Inland
sea I’m pretty sure that this Ferry is
from matama in shikoku and it’s heading
to yanai
Port the city of yanai actually
encompasses obatake so the ferry doesn’t
have much further to go before reaching
its
destination guess what another freight
train this one looks fairly lightly
loaded
though very lightly loaded in
fact the containerless wagons here makes
it look like the Train’s actually passed
but there’s still more to
come only a little bit more though it
has to be
said another satoi yellow passenger
train these trains are slowly being
replaced by Hiroshima Redwing units on
some Services as far as
tokuyama I have to say though I’ll be
sad to see the yellow trains
go all all right with there only being
one passenger train in each Direction an
hour it’s quite important to be aware of
the train times and the time for my
train is starting to get quite
close so I’m going to head slowly back
to the
station and from the station this is the
view of the osima
bridge have you ever visited obatake or
osima if you have please do leave a
comment let me know how it
was anyway thank you as ever for
watching I hope to see you again in
another video very soon but for now
goodbye

I haven’t stopped at Ōbatake Station, but I do remember passing the Oshima Bridge when traveling on one of those yellow trains between Iwakuni and Yanai.
