Japan’s Hokkaido Train from Hakodate to Sapporo / Limited Express Hokuto

Hello. It’s me, Hiro As you can see, I forgot my neck warmer at the hotel and am feeling down I am now in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan It’s deathly cold. Today I’m traveling from such a cold Hakata to Sapporo on a limited express train! But first, I’m going to eat some Hakodate specialties.

Hakodate is famous for its squid. Because Hakodate is a short distance from the fishing grounds to the port, squid can be landed in the best condition The boats are equipped with fish tanks, so the squid is brought live to the port and delivered to retailers and restaurants.

Since this is a squid city, the manhole covers are also squid. The post is also squid Convenience store decoration is also squid Anyway, everything is squid! Of course, all seafood in Hakodate is delicious, but today I want to eat only squid! I came to a restaurant where we could eat fresh squid!

Squid set meal with rice and miso soup It seems to be Hakodate style to eat it with Ginger soy sauce instead of Wasabi soy sauce. Squid is fresh so it has a nice, tough texture Yum Squid with vinegared miso

This restaurant seems to be famous, with lots of celebrity autographs on the walls. There are also many foreign tourists Perhaps everyone has learned the word “squid = ika” They all use Japanese well. It makes me happy to hear people ordering in good Japanese. I’m satisfied!

I am now going to take the Hokuto limited express train to Sapporo, about 320 kilometers away from Hakodate. And not to forget the ekiben (Lunch Box) “ikameshi.” “Ikameshi” is the most famous lunch box at Hakodate Station

My train has 90 minutes until departure, but I have nothing to do, so I head for the platform! Express “The Hokuto” had already arrived from Sapporo and was on the platform It is currently cleaning the inside of the car for turnaround operation This color scheme is very beautiful! I love it

Hokuto is a high-speed diesel express train that runs at speeds of up to 130 km/h (80.78 mph) The name “Hokuto” comes from the Japanese word for the Big Dipper Now it’s time to board! Okay, Let’s take a look at the interior facilities. Table drink holder Adjustable headrest Seat pitch is wide.

I’m 175cm (5’9″) tall and can sit comfortably. blind curtain Unfortunately, there were no electrical outlets or USB ports However, green seats (first class) seem to have power outlets Washroom bathroom Men’s Toilet Large luggage storage space for suitcases, etc. An hour before departure, I had already finished seeing everything on the train.

Which means I have nothing more to do… At times like this, I read brochures that I’m not particularly interested in. Ohhhh ! It’s my ikameshi! I can’t take it anymore! Let me start a solo party Since I am heading to Sapporo, of course I bought Sapporo Beer!

Cheers to a four-hour train trip! I really, really hate this kind of packaging! It looks soooo good! In my experience, brown food is mostly tasty. “Ikameshi” is squid meat with the guts removed, stuffed with sticky rice and cooked in a soy-sauce based broth.

“Ikameshi” was invented in 1941 during World War II to use squid, which was abundant at the time, to make a satisfying side dish even when rice was in short supply. When sold as an ekiben (Lunch Box), it was well received because the sticky rice in it made people feel full.

In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that I came to Hakodate to eat this “ikameshi” Ekiben is great to eat while watching the scenery flow by, right? We haven’t departed yet! What the hell am I doing in a train that doesn’t move one millimeter?

After all, my solo party ended at Hakodate station! 10 minutes before departure, the passengers were coming. Now, at last, the four-hour train trip to Sapporo begins! Our train runs along the sea. I wanted to eat a ekiden while looking at this beautiful snow land…

After running for a while, the train stops at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. I see a lot of people boarding from here. That’s because this station is currently the last stop on the Shinkansen line from Tokyo People coming from Tokyo or Aomori by Shinkansen probably change trains here to go to Sapporo.

By the way, the Shinkansen line is planned to be extended to Sapporo by 2030. It is still a long way off, but I am very much looking forward to it. Mt.Komagatake is on the right. It is an active volcano with a height of 1,131 meters.

Although the top of the mountain cannot be climbed due to ongoing volcanic activity, it is popular as a mountain that is easy to walk even for beginners! Arrive at Mori Station “Mori” means forest in Japanese Not even a forest, not even a single tree…. Why “forest”?

I see our train is running just on the edge of the coastline Let me say it again because it is important. I wanted to eat a Ekiben with such a nice view! That’s all. Thank you. Are we still here? You can experience that Hokkaido is really big. We are now in Muroran City

Muroran is a port town, but has also developed into one of Hokkaido’s leading industrial cities. It has recently gained a reputation for its beautiful night view By the way, the ferry I took from Aomori the other day also departs from and arrives at Muroran here.

Muroran has delicious food such as Curry ramen and Yakitori, so I hope to come here sometime! There was an announcement that an emergency stop may be made to avoid a collision with a deer Indeed, if you look outside, you can see mountains where deer might live. The great nature of Hokkaido!

Arrive at Noboribetsu Station Noboribetsu is famous for its hot springs! It only takes about 1 hour from Sapporo, so you can enjoy it as a day trip. I would like to come here sometime. There are too many fascinating places to visit in Hokkaido!

I had fallen asleep in the warm sunshine and the comfortable swaying of the train. Arrived at Sapporo Station 7 minutes late due to snow The train ride was wonderful with great scenery. I did fall asleep towards the end of the trip, though. We have arrived in Sapporo, Hokkaido’s largest city.

Thank you “Hokuto”. You made my day! Okay, so I’m hungry after a nap, so I’m gonna go eat some of Sapporo’s specialties. It is cold outside. He thought again that neck warmer is absolutely necessary in Hokkaido in winter I’ve already researched where to eat good ramen by Google

Sapporo is famous for its Sapporo Miso Ramen! Sapporo’s best miso ramen, with a rich, thick, mild miso soup topped with butter and corn! Super Yum Ah, this miso ramen warms me up

Last time I was in Sapporo, I ate a lot of Soup Curry like a silly person, but ramen is also delicious! Hokkaido is a really nice place with lots of good food. This Sapporo clock tower is famous as one of the three most disappointing spots in Japan!

Since we associate Hokkaido with vast land, we had assumed that it would stand proudly on a much larger piece of land. For example, I imagined it would look something like this But in reality, it is surrounded by large buildings and has no flavor at all.

Plus, I was disappointed that the museum closed at 17:00 and I couldn’t go inside It was a fun trip, despite the unexpected happening of eating a ekiben before departure! What delicious food will I eat on my next trip? Thank you for watching! I hope your trip is going to be a good one!

From Hakodate to Sapporo, I rode one of the most scenic trains in Japan. I enjoyed the breathtaking view while eating a delicious Ekiben(Lunch Box) “ikameshi” on this iconic express train.
