Ep.10: a surreal pirâmide nos Andes e o salar mais extenso do planeta • Catamarca 4×4
Check it out in this episode: We will travel through the immense Salar de Antofalla, the largest salt lake in the world, 150 km long. We will visit remote villages. We will discover the unusual multicolored lagoons of Ojos del Campo. We will arrive at a mysterious
And unique formation on the planet: the Cono de Arita, a perfect triangle formed in the middle of the desert. And we will spend the night in the isolated and cold village of Tolar Grande! Watch now the continuation of this great adventure in the desert of the Andes Mountains!
This video was produced with the support of: Nissin Cup Noodles Tireshop São Paulo Yokohama Tires Vasten Outdoor Equipment We were in Antofagasta de la Sierra. What a fantastic place to wake up! The frigid air contrasted with the sunny sky. Our guesthouse was located at one of the highest points in the village.
It was possible to appreciate much of the village and even herds of llamas. The objective of the day will be to head north. Enter the province of Salta and arrive at the village of Tolar Grande. There will be 310 km to cover on the day, pure off-road.
We visited the friendly shopping center of Antofagasta de la Sierra. The first mission of the morning is to buy supplies for lunch and breakfast for the next 2 days. We are here in Antofagasta buying supplies. We were talking here with the owner of the market,
He is also a guide. And I wanted to share something cool that we use every day, on our trips. What is your name? Alfredo. Alfredo, do you like it? Do you know? Yes! This attentive resident was Alfredo. He is a local tour guide and advised us on the best tire pressure
For the tough roads we will face that day. Ju and Tony enjoyed breaking into the lady’s house so let’s buy some more bread from her. Let’s go. Do you make the bread? No! How many? I’m going to eat in the car. How much does it cost? Do you like it? Yes!
It’s very tasty! Delicious! Thanks! You are small but you are… Powerful! Let’s start another day heading into the unknown, hoping to find more surreal beauty in the desert of the Andes! It’s an alpaca! It’s an alpaca! And there’s a llama! That’s a llama, that’s a vicuña and that’s an alpaca.
Look, there’s a sheep! The alpaca has a rounder head. The alpaca is not afraid of us, you see? So pretty! Look at her little face! Stop here! Hey! Cool! Hey! That cute! Headheads! This salt lake is Laguna Colorada. We began to gain altitude, already exceeding 3,500 meters.
Our goal was beyond those vast mountains. You will have to cross them! It will be an arduous climb! We did not come across any other vehicles. The road was only ours and the vicuñas, which could already be seen at the high altitude where we were.
We started the climb! The steepness of this mountain was surprising , requiring all the power of the engines and 4×4 traction. I’m also feeling like it’s forcing. It’s rising fast. Every 2, 3 meters, one meter. We are really climbing the mountain!
In a stretch of just 7 km, we reached an altitude of 4,200 m. We were here enjoying the vicuñas We didn’t even realize we were approaching this wall! Look, he’s huge! Look at the height of this wall in front of us. My God! What a horrible thing!
Wow, it looks like a giant wave. The comparison that Tony made is really cool. It looks like a wave! Despite the endless beef ribs, it was possible to maintain a good speed. We were crossing the Quebrada Del Diablo, which will take us to the Salar de Antofalla.
Suddenly, we entered a patch of dark sand. It looks like a sea of volcanic sand that stopped here. It was possible to see the volcano responsible for depositing all this material in an eruption that occurred thousands of years ago. It’s black! Is it all black? I can see? Our!
It’s not just a layer of black sand. It’s all black underneath. I didn’t find it salty. I tasted this salt. It tastes like earth. Just look! What is that, Marcio? This one ahead is the Salar de Antofalla. It is the largest salt flat in the world. It’s a show of colors, isn’t it?
We arrived at the famous Salar de Antofalla. At 150 km long and less than 10 km wide, it is known as the longest salt lake in the world. Hi Ju. Look Marcio. So, here he says Vega de las Quinoas. Yeah, it was up here. Near Antofalla. Yeah, this one.
We found an oasis in the middle of the desert. In one of the driest territories on the planet, having a shade to prepare lunch is a true luxury. We collected another lunch prepared in an unusual setting! We still had a long route to Tolar Grande.
Doesn’t it give the impression that the painter mixed several colors on the palette? This here is the palette with the mixed colors. He messed up all the colors, it looked wonderful! Wow, how crazy! It looks like there’s salt dripping out of it.
Is it a waterfall in the desert? No! A mountain covered with salt. Could it be that salt was formed by runoff from an eruption? It’s the Cono Salar de Antofalla! We arrived at an unusual attraction called Ojos del Campo! It is a set of 12 underground water wells.
Each well maintains different chemical conditions and microorganisms, which give different colors to each one. There were wells with blue, green and even orange water! But be careful, as these waters are toxic, with high levels of arsenic. Look at the top of the mountain saying “Welcome to Antofalla”.
We entered the village of Antofalla, with just 40 inhabitants. We thought about resting and having a cold drink, but we didn’t find any commercial establishments. Some residents came to talk to us. Thanks! Where are they from? We are from Brazil! We also met an Australian backpacker here!
We also left Cup Noodles for some workers. They were quite happy! We saw a large herd. They weren’t llamas or alpacas, they were wild donkeys that live in the Andes Mountains. Look deep inside, how beautiful! White, everything white! Beautiful thing! Then comes a little gray.
In this section we noticed several points shining on the hills. We decided to investigate the origin of the glow. There’s something shining here. Let’s see what this is. Beautiful! Look how beautiful! Very cool! Shines from afar! In this new landscape we find
A very curious formation. It looks like a peak above the clouds. After covering almost the entire length of the Salar de Antofalla, we reached its northern end at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. In this oasis there is a village known as Antofallita, or little Antofalla.
We only saw 2 or 3 houses here and only 1 resident, who was curious about our arrival. We imagine what it would be like to live in this isolation. Goodbye. How do you get there? Did you get lost in Antofallita, Marcio? I’m lost. I thought! He thought? I thought!
To leave the Salar de Antofalla valley, we will have to climb a steep and tortuous climb! We surpassed 4,000 meters again. In this section, the beef ribs came back to punish us. Shaking a lot! What is the average speed, Marcio? 30 km/h here. These beef ribs are hurting! You’re crazy!
It’s an endurance test for the car. And in the distance, we finally saw the Salar de Arizaro and the silhouette of the iconic and imposing Cono de Arita! How beautiful! Cute, huh? We crossed a magma field dumped by the volcano.
It was possible to imagine the energy and heat that emanated from this eruption that occurred at some point in the planet’s history. From that moment on, emotion took over each one of the group, intensifying as we approached the immense pyramid. This was one of the most anticipated moments of the expedition:
We were in front of the Cono de Arita! Rising imposingly in the middle of an immense salt flat, the Cono de Arita forms a perfect triangle, the result of millions of years of erosion on rocks originating from during a period of intense volcanic activity in the region.
We are on the 13th day of the expedition and today we arrived here in front of Cono de Arita. It’s too exciting! Many natural landscapes move us, but we have seen this one in particular in many documentaries and photos. And when we get here before him we think: “wow, it’s real!”.
It wasn’t just an illustration, a story… It’s here before us. It’s very grand. This colossal geological spectacle was illuminated by the evening sunlight of this memorable day. The Cono de Arita is more than just a geological formation. It is a monument to nature’s tireless patience
And its ability to create true masterpieces over time. It was time to move on, as there were still 70 km to travel to the day’s destination. This is Salar de Arizaro. The huge salt lake in the province of Salta extends from the border with Catamarca in the south,
To the province of Jujuy in the north. In the silence of the vastness of this salt desert, we contemplate the end of an extraordinary day. It was a magical moment. Beautiful sunset! With the darkness of the desert, the temperature plummeted quickly. We’re almost arriving in Tolar! Not long! We arrived in Tolar Grande!
Despite being small, we were enchanted by the serene and welcoming atmosphere. It’s well organized here! What a great coincidence! We met the local guide who was with the group of Brazilians at Campo de Piedra Pomez! Our accommodation was actually in the home of a local resident, a cook at the village school.
Your house is very big! Despite being simple, the house was very clean, well maintained and complete. Our guesthouse is next to the generator. There were only 2 restaurants in the village. Due to the scarcity of supplies, we had to make a reservation. One of them had a waiting list
Of at least 2 hours. We got a table at Comedor Mimi. Here we were allocated what appeared to be the children’s room of the residents of the house. What a fantastic experience this is! Here! Perfect! Wait! The cap! Very good!
In the end, we would remember this meal as the most fun of the expedition! Check it out in the next episode: In the middle of the Andes Mountains, we will reach the furthest point of our expedition. We will encounter a gloomy ghost town that was left decades ago.
We’ll visit the city’s deactivated mine and even an isolated cemetery in the middle of the desert. At 5,000 meters above sea level, we will reach the border with Chile along a completely abandoned 4×4 trail. We resort to oxygen due to altitude sickness. We will have our path blocked by ice.
And we will have even more unbelievable landscapes in this extreme location in the Argentine Andes. Subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications! Also leave your like and share our videos!
