瀬戸内海に浮かぶ👹女木島 Would you visit Japan’s “Ogre Island”?
Megijima, Kagawa Prefecture Our ferry is about to dock at Megijima Port. We boarded this ferry in Takamatsu, and our journey has taken just 20 minutes. The one-way fare is just 370 yen. On the quayside, we are greeted by the sight of seagulls, although these ones are not real.
Rather, these seagulls are a modern artwork, one of several to be found on this island. After we and most of the other passengers disembark, the ferry will continue on to the island of Ogijima. Among the other artworks on Megijima is this replica statue of an Easter Island Moai.
We are now outside the island’s main tourist attraction, namely “Onigashima Cave”, which translates as “Ogre Island Cave”, although it is sometimes referred to as “Ogre Cave”. Megijima has become associated with “Onigashima”, the Ogre Island from the story of Momotarō, a popular folklore figure.
In the legend, Momotarō visited the island to fight the ogres. Onigashima Cave, which is located halfway up Megijima’s highest mountain, Mt. Washigamine, is marketed as the ogres’ fortress from the Momotarō story. Inside the cave, we see a number of large models of ogres from the story of Momotarō.
We also see heaps of tiles depicting the faces of ogres. These tiles were created by 3,000 middle school students for the 2013 Setouchi Triennale art festival. A 10-minute hike from the cave exit is the Mt. Washigamine observation deck, This observation deck offers a spectacular 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea..
This bus connects the ferry terminal with the Onigashima Cave. Round-Trip Fare: 800 yen; One-way: 500 yen. We are now back at the coast, with its popular swimming beach. There are also further modern art works like this.
Besides ogres, Megijima is associated with stone walls, known as “Ōte”, which protect the village from strong winds. Our ferry is approaching. This will take us to the island of Ogijima, a journey of about 20 minutes.
A tour around the island of Megijima in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea; an island popularly known as “Onigashima”, which means “Ogre Island”.
