東京一の崖と隠れた美しい庭:雑司が谷・目白散歩|鬼子母神堂・肥後細川庭園・椿山荘|4K
Hello everyone, long time no see! I am currently on my way to Waseda Station. Today, I plan to take a stroll around Zōshigaya. There are many historical sites here that are not too crowded with tourists. On a weekend morning in Waseda, you can sporadically see students around.
The Haruki Murakami-themed Waseda University International Literature Museum Span across the Waseda campus, we can take the Toden Arakawa Line to Kishibojin. This is the only street tram in Tokyo. Running from San’ya Bridge to Waseda, it covers a total length of about 12 kilometers.
No matter how many stops you ride, the fare is 170 yen. The tram car is very compact. Before heading to Kishibojin, let’s first buy some the famous melonpan nearby. melonpan are 250 yen each, available in original, strawberry, chocolate, and caramel flavors. You can also add cream, 330 yen each.
In front of Kishibojin, there’s a nostalgic little street. There are many ancient ginkgo trees here. Kishibojin is the deity of safe childbirth and parenting. She was once a demon but repented and converted to Buddhism. Hence, the character for “demon” on the plaque here lacks the top stroke, symbolizing repentance. A 600-year-old ginkgo tree.
Behind Kishibojin Temple is Myōken Hall, dedicated to Myōken Bodhisattva. Walking towards Munetsuki Zaka. The day of the shoot was Halloween, and parents were taking their children to participate in activities. Although it is a residential area, the slope is daunting. Higo Hosokawa Garden, right next to Chinzan-so, has abundant water resources.
The entire garden is built around water, creating several landscapes for water appreciation that vary in style. Unlike the common flat Japanese gardens, Hosokawa Garden is built against a hill. Every step offers a change of scenery, presenting a fresh view from different angles.
The Eisei-Bunko Museum at the top of the hill displays the Hosokawa family’s collection of Asian antiques. Leaving Hosokawa Garden, we head towards Munetsuki Zaka. Munetsuki Zaka is not long, but it’s lined with various shrines, gardens, and has a strong historical atmosphere. The Tokyo Cathedral, completed in 1964 and designed by Kenzō Tange.
Has a futuristic avant-garde feel. The legendary hotel, Chinzan-so. Let’s take a break and have something to drink. Chinzan-so has a Japanese garden located behind the hotel. Built on the undulating terrain of Mejiro, the garden collects various rare stones and famous trees from across the country.
Spring sakura, summer fireflies, autumn maple leaves, and winter camellias. Beautiful scenery unfolds throughout the year. That’s it for today’s journey. Thank you for watching! Wish to see you in the next episode.
