知覧の武家屋敷と特攻平和記念を訪ねる【2023冬南九州旅行6】
Thank you for watching. Please watch to the end. Kagoshima Chuo Station, Kyushu, Japan, December 2023. In the last video, we stayed at a very cheap hotel at 3700 yen per night. Today I would like to go sightseeing in Kagoshima in earnest.
I have visited Kagoshima city in the past, so this time I wanted to visit a city I have never been to on the Satsuma Peninsula. So this time, I would like to visit Chiran, which is famous for its samurai residences and Kamikaze bases. The ticket to be used is the Seishun 18 Ticket.
First, have your stamp stamped at the manned ticket gate. Head for track 1. Boarding is for a regular train bound for Yamakawa on the Ibusuki-makurazaki Line. Today, too, you can board a Japan National Railways type diesel train. Sitting is, of course, in a box seat. At 8:38, the train departs Kagoshima Chuo Station.
Kagoshima sightseeing starts. This old vehicle runs through the condominium district of Kagoshima. It also runs side by side with the Kagoshima City Tram for a while. There are many passengers getting on and off the train during commuting hours. After driving for a while, Sakurajima comes into view in the distance.
The train runs along Kinko Bay. The train runs close to the sea in some places. The ocean is still nice. This is a local train, so it stops at every station. The train moves forward at a leisurely pace while enjoying the view of the sea. The destination is almost there.
Arrival at Kiire station at 9:23. The fare was 570 yen. From here, we will take a bus to our first destination, Chiran. The bus stop is on the right as you exit the station; the location of the bus stop was changed in October 2023. Straight ahead on the road,
The bus stop for the bus to Chiran came into view. Around 9:33, the Kagoshima Kotsu bus bound for Chiran arrives. The fare is 640 yen. As you can see, we have climbed the mountain enough to see the ocean. Maybe that’s why the bus is going slowly.
Around 10:10, 10 minutes late, we got off at the last stop, Buke Yashiki Iriguchi. As the name suggests, this is near the Chiran samurai residence. The Satsuma clan established samurai villages in various parts of the country during the Edo period to rule over them.
Among them, the samurai villages here in Chiran are said to have adopted the culture of Kyoto. Well maintained hedges are characteristic of this area. Several samurai residences offer garden tours for a fee. But this time, I don’t have time, so I’m going to pass it up.
Oh well, it seems that this place is free to visit. This is a unique architectural style of Chiran called “Chiran-type Futatsuya”. The samurai residences continue for 500m. In fact, these samurai residences are still used as ordinary residences. Therefore, the hedges are cared for by the residents. I think this is great.
Now that we have finished sightseeing at the samurai residences, we are heading to our next destination. Around 10:40, the bus bound for Kagoshima Kotsu Tokko-Kannon Iriguchi. This bus came from Kagoshima Chuo Station. The fare is 170 yen. I was lucky to sit in the front row. Lanterns continue to the next destination.
Within 10 minutes we were at our destination. Arrived at the Tokko-kannon entrance bus stop around 10:50. Kamikaze Kannon, quite a disturbing name. What is here? Chiran was a base for Kamikaze attacks during the World War II. The airfield was removed after the war.
But it was redeveloped as a peace park to pass on the memory of those days. A replica of a fighter plane is located in the park. Today we came here to learn about the relationship between Chiran and the Kamikaze pilots.
First, we visited the Kamikaze Kannon, which is also the name of the bus stop. It was built after the war to commemorate those who died in Kamikaze attacks. Next stop was Triangle Barracks. Kamikaze pilots slept here until just before their departure. And here is the Chiran Peace Museum. Entrance fee: 500 yen.
Photographing was prohibited inside the museum, but only this Zero fighter plane could be photographed. I visited various exhibits. I was surprised at how young the photos of the Kamikaze pilots on display were. It made me think a lot about the inhumanity to these boys.
Also, it was good that I could learn about the culture of Chiran at the Museum Chiran, which I could enter with a common ticket. I am glad I came all the way here even though it is in the middle of nowhere.
