The Bonin Islands Sea. Watching many whales. Swimming with a dolphin. Hello! This is the PAT INN hotel on Chichijima. Breakfast on the terrace. Lots of island ingredients. Female shorebird. This bird is in Tokyo, too. Lobby of the hotel. Lunch box for $8. Nice weather. Hotel shuttle departs. I’m going whale watching now.

I would even meet a dolphin. Bonin Islands are 1000km south of Tokyo. Many whales in this ocean. A tour company car picks me up. Heading to the port. Purchase food and beverage on the way. Arrive at the landing place. There are 10 tour participants. There’s also a captain and a guide.

Let’s get on board. Be careful not to fall overboard. To the aft deck. Upstairs cockpit. Boats departing one after another. Lots of tour companies. Cabin space. Toilet on board. Departure. Ogasawara Maru to starboard. North along the island. The harbor is moving away. Rock sticking out of the sea. Sea between Chichijima and Anijima.

This is the Anijima Straits. Fixing boat to buoy. The sea water is very clear. Snorkeling for a while. And to the sea with whales. A humpback whale ahead. Squirting. Again. Humpback whales are common in February and March. Adults are 13-14 meters long. “Fluke up” is a diving with the tail fin showing.

Back to the surface. “Breach” is a big jump! Why do whales jump? To drop parasites. Also for communication and play. Various theories. “Pec slap” is tapping the surface of the sea with the pectoral fins. Behavior when relaxed. Once more in slow motion. Big jump not often seen. To the next spot.

Swimming with dolphins. A dolphin crosses right in front of me. Within arm’s reach. It is rare to swim with dolphins. Our guide took these photos. Looking for whales again. Searching by drone from the sky. Found! Mother and baby. Humpback whales give birth in warm waters in winter.

In summer they go to the cold ocean where food is plentiful. Babies are 4 to 5 meters long. Just born this winter. Nearly a year of child rearing. Whale calves grow up in this sea. Even babies squirt. They also leap. Let’s stay with these whales for a while.

They’ve shown up a number of times. It’s almost noon. Let’s have a lunch. Lunch box purchased at the hotel. Surrounded by the sea. I had it while watching the whales. Mother and baby diving side by side. During the period of breastfeeding, mother hardly eats anything. Sometimes breastfeeds while sleeping.

Raising a child is hard work. The drone is back. Let’s move on to the next place. Thank you, whale mother and baby. Blessed with fine weather. See you! Farewell squirt? Once more. Whales go to the cold water in the spring. They travel thousands of kilometers.

Next winter, the whales will return to these waters. Maybe I’ll see a grown whale again. Here’s another whale. Looks like it’s sleeping. Whale puts right brain and left brain to sleep separately. Humans cannot do it. This is the distance from the whale. The rule is not to approach within 100 meters.

To the southern tip of Chichijima. Oddly shaped rocks. Enjoy the scenery. A very prominent rock can be seen. Its name is “Heart Rock.” Formed by red clay flowing into a V-shaped fault. It’s time to head back to the harbor. Wonderful time. Wonderful experience. Seabirds all along the breakwater. To the landing place.

Back to the hotel. Shop at the store. I bought these … Large star fruit $2. Goose eggs $1 Mini-tomatoes, 1 pack, $3. Passion fruit 3 pieces, $5. Dusk. The beer is good. I had a good time today. To the hotel restaurant. Dinner menu. Bolognese $10. Assorted appetizers $5. Chichijima Night.

Two days to full moon. And starry sky. Orion. Canopus, almost invisible in Tokyo. Thank you for watching! Tomorrow I will leave Bonin Islands. Back to Tokyo by ferry. Good bye at Chichijima.

  2. oh my goodness! how special and beautiful! i'm so happy you shared this with us. i can't get enough of these amazing islands!

  6. Thank you so much for your videos about Bonin Islands. If there is still Paradise left on Earth it is there. I greatly enjoyed watching.

  7. Thank You so much, it was really wonderful trip… Whales are really special and it is so great experience to watch them in This beautiful place.. Good luck!

  8. Look but don’t touch, not for eating. 😅 it is better to swim with the dolphins than swimming with the great white shark.😱

  9. What a great video and great experience. Maybe Dolphin in my country still common to see at sea, especially during onboard at ship, but for Whale is rare. Something known about whale in my country is he/she always stranded at beach.

  10. Wow, what an amazing experience! I can't imagine how it must feel to be so close to these majestic animals.
I really loved the mother and her baby calf.
And how lucky you were to spot a dolphin swimming next to you.
All in all, the experience of lifetime!
Thank you so much for taking us with you to these beautiful islands.
    I've loved every video!❤
Saying hi from the Netherlands. 🤗 🇳🇱
