Gwangjang Market Ultimate Korean Food Tour: Kalguksu, Sundae & Bindaetteok

So you might recognize this place you might have  seen it on the Netflix show street food Asia this   place became popular because they filmed here and  obviously they couldn’t film in the whole place so   they hand selected a number of different stools  in here now obviously those are the most popular

And you have huge cues for them I came yesterday  evening and the ones that have the Netflix look   they’re smart they put the board up outside  saying as seen on Netflix they have massive   cues and whilst that’s all great and I’m sure  they’re fantastic I don’t think they need any

More promotion they’re doing doing just fine on  their own so I think what we’ll do is we’ll find   some alternatives to try and try and promote some  people who weren’t in the show I mean let’s face

It the real reason is that I can’t be bothered  to queue one of the most famous things in this   market is the Mandu you have two types you have  the kimchi and then you have the pork and herb and

Here we have this lady setting up for the day and  making them so you can see she’s making well she’s   already made some of the kimchi ones but this is  the pork so it looks like pork mint scallion or

Spring onion she takes one of the wrappers dips it  in a little bit of oil so it sticks and then the   magic happens the folding first into a half moon  presses it down and then wraps it around so to

Get that perfect Mandu shape as you can see here  look at that it’s been open 20 minutes while I’ve   been looking around and it’s already starting to  get pretty damn crowded this lady is grinding the

Mung beans and this is the grinder here I have a  big bowl of the mung beans and then it’s made into   that paste which is covering up but this is the  stuff that makes those mung bean pancakes have to

Make the paste from it first or grind it down how  cool is that it’s time to try the Bindae-tteok or   the mung bean pancake I found one which looks  super good she’s frying them so crispy exactly

How I like things like this so this is going to  be the one I said before the process starts off   by grounding the mung beans into a paste and then  mixing it into the batter which is then scooped

Into to the oil where it fries and just look how  crisp and golden she’s getting them thank you   so much I’ve got it B the mung bean pancake how  crispy does this look just look at that fried to

Absolute perfection the important thing the thing  I was looking for with that was how hot was the   oil because if the oil isn’t hot enough and it’s  just sat there sizzling away very gently then that

Mung bean pancake is going to suck up all of the  oil so I was looking for one where the oil was   not Super Hoops you don’t want it to burn but it  was sizzling away quite frantically and then you

Know it’s not going to be so greasy and so oily  when you eat it it cost me 5,000 for one whole   one this is just half I have here so two pieces  here have another two pieces as well to snack on

Later so 5,000 for one I don’t know if you can  buy them individually they were already cut up   but I think you have to buy them as a whole  anyway let’s stop talking about it let’s try

It it is so so crispy on the outside  maybe you could hear it as I bite into it can you hear that so crispy on the outside  and although it is ground up I think there’s

Still little bits of the mung bean in there as  well so they go super crispy can taste them as   you as you crunch into it but on the inside it’s  light it’s fluffy it’s creamy it’s Rich there’s

Onions in there too so you get a nice onion flavor  coming through you don’t taste mung bean it just   tastes like a nice soft fluffy crispy on the  outside pancake super tasty not greasy at all

Not oily as I expected that is a seriously good  snack it’s not just a food market it is a proper   Market you can buy Goods you can buy clothes  you can buy stationer obviously you have all

Of the food from the stuff you can pick and eat  to the stuff you can buy and take home and it’s   not just the tourist Market that’s what I love  about it so much there are plenty of locals here

Eating their breakfast or coming in the evening  to have their dinner it is a must do in Salt this   is the one which is probably most famous in  here and it’s the one which does the the hand

Cut noodle she had a very emotional story and  a very interesting story on the Netflix series   actually if I wanted to eat here now I probably  could eat here straight away without waiting but   as you can see advertising the Netflix show which  is fair enough I have nothing against it in fact

I’m all for it these people work incredibly  hard but you’ve probably seen enough of this   one right so let’s find another and try some of  these hand cut noodles I found a little store

Where I wanted to try the kalguksu if you want  to know it’s store number 11 as I say they all   sell the same thing so it’s just about picking  one that looks good picking one where the owner

Looks friendly sitting down and ordering your  meal setup is exactly the same you have a huge   pile of pickles all different types of pickles  looks amazing the good thing about this place   being so popular is that the menus are in  English and in Korean so it’s super easy for

Tourists can I have the uh kgu here we have her  rolling out the hand cut noodles she’s already   made the dough you can see you have the big  chunks of dough here little bit of rice flour

And then she’s rolling it out on the stainless  steel top with a large here we go little bit   of rice flour on top just to stop it sticking  and she rolls it around that rolling pin skills

Again it’s landed at the table looks super tasty  very big actually in this large metal Bowl on top   you have dried seaweed sesame seeds you put a  little bit of white pepper in like some little   shredded scallions but underneath this is what  it’s all about it’s all about those hand cut

Hand rolled noodles and you can see because  they’re hand cut they’re not uniform they’re   all different lengths slightly different shapes a  little bit Wiggly thicker than you’d expect then   on the side some of the pickles a little plate  of pickled greens with a little bit of pickled

Cabbage in there as well looks pretty good and  then of course we’re in South Korea After all   you’ve got the pickled cabbage or kimchi  it’s actually warming up a little at least   warm enough to take the jacket off in here because  everything is steaming and cooking the inside of

The market is quite warm actually still I think  a perfect day to have a warming bowl of noodles   so let’s try it first of all let’s just try the  broth and see what that tastes like if it needs anything very interesting very well different to  what I expected it’s incredibly meaty there’s so

Much Savory flavor in that seaweed as well that  it completely rounds out the dish then you get   the spiciness of the pepper and it’s white pepper  it’s not black pepper it’s white pepper so there

Is a spice and a kick to it it’s salty it’s hot  and it’s very very Savory what more do you want   apart from a touch of vinegar you’re are V bam  food sorry bam B bam food stop filming just have

A laugh with her she looked at me like I was  a crazy person for putting vinegar in there   said you are from Vietnam they put vinegar in  their noodles but well you guys know if you’re

Watching me I love putting vinegar in my noodles  because I love the salty and the sour I asked her   if she wanted to try to convince herself but  she said no walked off laughing anyway let’s

Try it it’s rumbled me now maybe I’ve made  a mistake so much better guys if you do not   put a little bit of vinegar in your noodles  especially when it’s a more salty broth put

A little bit and that balance is so so good she  should try it I just want to show you how silky   soft these noodles are I mean look at that let’s  try these noodles with chopsticks these are maybe   the hardest Chopsticks I’ve had they’re flat  they’re metal and nothing is sticking to them

Anyway let’s try it steaming steaming hot so so  good she’s cooked them she cooked them for a few   minutes but because they’re thick the chew on  the inside they are wheat noodles if you didn’t   know this dish actually I think it originated  from the Chinese in the 19th century came over

From there but then it was really pushed  with the wheat noodles when the Americans   came here and they were pushing wheat to be  used within the country now it’s obviously a staple the pepperiness I didn’t expect  it to have so much pepperiness she put

A good portion of pepperiness in there the  broth is powerful because of that and again   with the richness of the meaty flavor  let’s try it with the pickles wow look   at that those pickle greens are super tasty  more sour than I expected more funky than I

Expected maybe that’s why she thought the  vinegar was strange because those pickles   cut straight through that rich broth first of  all we’ll just as I sort my Chopsticks out in   my hand there we go I’m not that much of an  amateur first of all let’s just try it as it

Is and you know what I really want to do because  I think I want a little bit more acidity in my   noodles I’m actually going to take some of the  kimchi juice and put this is probably really

Making a mistake and make sure she’s not watching  but a little bit of kimchi juice into the noodles   Traditions are there to be respected understood  we should forget Traditions but they’re also   there to be broken they aren’t rules so if I’m  thinking that’s going to work well should try it

Yeah just adds a new level of flavor in there I  love playing around with food like that as long   as you’re being respectful and you’re not just  you know not shoving chocolate powder in there   or something as long as you’re being respectful  to the ingredients then why not very very good

This is what I mean I have no doubt that the  Netflix people are very very good hello Netflix   people are very very good but there are so many  more great places here to eat and you shouldn’t   just restrict yourself anyway let’s go on  the hunt for some more snack style things

Just off the main part of the market you have  this little offshoot actually I walk down this   entrance but you have more of I’m not going to  call it a wet Market but you have vegetables you

Have a fish monger you have all of the pickled  vegetables and that is what I want to show you   because for me Korean culture is all about the  vegetables and the pickles that you get on the

Side of the dish and well take a look at this  these stools are absolutely amazing I imagine   it like well a kid in a candy store not that not  that I have that expression but you can imagine

All of the sweets lined up in jars but you have  absolutely everything here in fact you even have   pickled crab you have the Pickled row and then  everything as you would imagine covered in the

Chili paste so like a red pepper kimchi that you  have here again maybe this is like a little radish   or carrot kimchi all the other vegetables green  vegetables more tiny chili crabs and then your   pure pickles pickle garlic pickle chestnuts  and other here I’m not entirely sure what

It is but it’s got Sesame you’ve got Lotus root  absolutely in heaven when it comes to pickles and Korea we should try some of the blood sausage  and you can get it all throughout the market   here but this little Auntie I’m thinking  of the right word but this auntie seems

To have a little buzz around her it’s  quieting down now but constantly there   is a big cure around her serving it so  I think we’re going to get some from her back in my little spot it seems to be the only  place that I can get away and get a little bit

Of peace to sit down and film here it is the  blood sausage and you can see inside it that   looks like rice but it’s actually I think  vermicelli noodles you obviously have the   blood which has been steamed as well as it cooks  and see on the inside just look at the structure

Let’s say of that inside it is vermicelli  noodles as I said sometimes you also have   barley in there you have other things in there  maybe some fermented soybean paste but really   that depends on the region and who’s making it  doesn’t look like there’s any barley in this

One um no I don’t think it looks like there’s  any barley in this one but it’s encased in the   intestine as a normal sausage is obviously the  pig’s blood then it’s steamed to be cooked it

Also comes with I’m not entirely sure what  this is but it might be a bag of chili salt   so we’ll try it with that too but I think  for the first bite let’s just try it as it

Is m that is different to a lot of blood sausages  that I’ve had it’s very interesting in flavor and   texture actually it’s chewy I didn’t expect it  to be chewy but then you get the nice flavor

Meaty flavor and some spice in there which I’m not  entirely sure what it is but maybe that is the the   bean paste coming through you don’t get that as a  hit but there’s something in the background there   working in the background very nice texture I  really like it actually it’s not too overpowering

It’s not too over the top sometimes blood sausage  can be a bit like that I mean I love it like that   but if you’re squeamish maybe you don’t but this  one H again like I’ve said before on other videos

When we’ve eaten chicken blood cake if you didn’t  know this was blood and you had a blind taste test   I don’t think you’d know you just think it was  a good sausage let’s sprinkle a little bit of

That well mystery salt on it that’s heavy so maybe  we’ll take another piece and dip it on top there   we go all right with the salt it is chili salt and  it’s damn tasty actually the sausage on its own

Isn’t very very seasoned in terms of salt anyway I  mean it’s a nice flavor but it’s not very seasoned   that’s why you get that little that little bag  on the side so that goes absolutely perfectly   with it and it just brings out all of those  flavors obviously something without seasoning

Isn’t going to taste as good as something with  seasoning so once it’s been dipped in that even   better oh I forgot to say 601 for one portion  whatever one portion was probably something   like 100 G but I mean it’s a good portion I’m  definitely full from it I have polished it all

Off so with the smallest amount of space left  in my stomach let’s go find something sweet   this donut shop it literally sells like a Chinese  style donut they’re handmade they’re homemade and   then they’re deep fried of course but look you  just get one in the cup they’re cheap they look

Tasty oh man it’s definitely bigger oh man let’s  got a 1000 out now can you hold this a second can   you hold this yeah thanks we’ll get our money out  now so you can put it on you like this wait like

This then I’ve lost my channel guys 1,000 right  yeah can start to see what’s going on over here   so got the dough being made ready to fry they make  it here cuz it looks like they’re using looks a

Bit like Salina just to keep them not sticking oh  yeah here we go so you have 1,000 then you have   some other things as well I’m not entirely sure  ah okay so you have these balls but I’m not sure

What they ah I know what they are they’ll have  like uh red bean paste inside so this is a red   bean paste that be put inside and then fried but  let’s just get one knows thank you just one please

Rolled in that Sugar thank you thank you thank  you nice to meet you take care bye-bye thank   you thank you we did it and well here’s everyone  so everyone cues and then they queue here to eat

Anyway it’s hot but I can show you properly  this time how light and fluffy it is on the   inside it’s more like a fluffy donut  hello hello from Japan whereabouts   Tokyo Osaka Osaka is good good it’s  good cheers what did you say compai comp thank you but it’s so

Good it’s worth the queue good right it’s good I  love it it’s light it’s fluffy it’s crispy it’s   sweet not too sweet like there’s a crunch  the sugar on the outside it’s pretty good

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Gwangjang Market is the most famous street food market in Seoul for traditional Korean street food. This iconic market, renowned among locals, catapulted to international fame through its feature in the Netflix series “Street Food Asia: Korea.” For those venturing into Seoul’s food scene or looking to indulge in Netflix-celebrated street food, Gwangjang Market is an unmissable destination. I will take you on a Gwangjang market tour and eat all of the best food from the market and food which appeared on the Seoul Street Food Netflix episode, we even see the famous Gwangjang Market lady.

Our Gwangjang Market Food Tour includes tasting the legendary kalguksu (handmade, knife-cut noodles), the crisp and savory bindaetteok (mung bean pancake), and the Gwangjang Market sundae (Korean blood sausage), a staple in Korean street food culture. I finish with maybe the most famous food in Gwangjang market. At least, it can be called that if you look at the queues. A Chinese doughnut.

It was a fun Korean street food tour for me so let’s go on this delicious journey together and discover why Gwangjang Market is a cornerstone of Seoul’s street food scene.

After taking a recommendation from Paddy Doyle Gwangjang Market surprised me.

  1. That blood sausage reminds me of black pudding. Will you be showing us more Korean bizarre food like live octopus? 😅

  2. You ate most of the popular dishes at Gwangjang. I typically eat my sundae with tteokbokki, so I can dip in the sauce. Great serious in Korea.

  3. I use vinegar/chili fried garlic concoction in most food that I eat these days. It really does make food that much better, in your case it's noodles.😋

  4. Those hand made noodles were worth the flight to South Korea alone. My sort of meal especially with all the pepper.

  5. Great content as always. Did the conversation with the lady about the addition of vinegar lead to anything?

  6. Honestly, as a South Korean, I regret that you visited Myeong-dong and Gwangjang Market.

These two places have far more foreigners than South Koreans, And have a very bad reputation among South Koreans.

That's why there aren't many South Koreans.

They sell low quality food at high prices. (Because most of them are sold to foreign tourists. To get them to spend a lot of money.)

These two places are frequently reported in the news in South Korea due to controversy over price gouging.

  7. Finally Joe, this one took ages for me to watch but i saved the best fir last.❤

  8. I AM A KOREAN. YOU'D BETTER VISIT ANOTHER MARKET. THIS MARKET IS TERRIBLE! I AM SURE THAT YOU WILL REGRET IF YOU GO THERE! THOSE ARE RIP OFF! 😂😂
I APOLIZE ON BEHALF OF ALL THE CRAPPY MERCHANTS OUT THERE…

  9. I’m glad you tired Sundae. I didn’t used to like it growing up but have come to crave it as I’ve gotten older😊
