Map of where we explore today. Piazza Bra . Verona Arena. The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheater from the 1st century AD. Now used for opera performances. Opera season is June to the early September. This is the largest piazza in Verona, and the heart of the city.
Aida, Nabucco, Carmen, Turandot, La Traviata, and Rigoletto are some of the operas performed here. This natural amplification enhances the performance of the singers at the Arena. Imagine yourself watching an opera under the stars on a summer evening. Can you feel the magic?
Although, winter in Verona is as charming. It’s very lively, yet less crowded than in the summer. Arena was built during the reign of Emperor Augustus. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, and executions. It used to accommodate over 30,000 spectators.
The original outer façade of the Verona Arena was made of white and pink limestone from Valpolicella. “Arena’s heart” (“Ai Navigli,” a modern sculpture) Via Giuseppe Mazzini We will explore here later. Verona is famous for love and romance because it’s the setting of Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet.”

Porta Nuova in Verona, the medieval and Renaissance-era city gate. This is the gate you go through when you come from the Verona train station. A quote from Shakespeare’s “Rome and Juliet” Act 3, Scene 3.
