Traveling Alone in Central Mongolia
Traveling in Mongolia is unlike anywhere we’ve ever been so far in our time here we’ve managed to explore the capital city visit temples tucked away into mountains sample the local Cuisine and be awed by the out of this world Landscapes of the GOI desert you got to come guys Mongolia is
Where it’s at but even with all of this we felt like we hadn’t really sunk our teeth into this country you see each of those Adventures had the safety net of a big city or local guides
To make sure we never felt too far out of our comfort zones but we came to Mongolia with every intention of testing our travel skills and to do that we needed to go solo no guide
Telling us where to go no driver navigating our route and no one to bail us out if we found ourselves in a pinch chances of popping a tire are ridiculously high and they feel like they got way higher just us and Mongolia why is no one here doesn’t everyone know this
Place is awesome so we’re packing everything we might need for the next 3 days into this rented Toyota Land Cruiser and beginning our own self-guided adventure through Central Mongolia good morning everyone we are just finishing up our final packing before we start a big adventure but
Before we hit the road which hopefully will be really soon so that we can beat UL Batar crazy morning traffic we just want to introduce to you our brand new or at least new to us Toyota Land
Cruiser pra this is an awesome 4×4 car that we have never driven before it’ll be our very first time and all I think about when I think of Toyota Land Cruiser is off the road into the wild going
Over crazy bumps and terrain and sand I’m not sure if that’s going to be all the things that we’ll be doing but maybe just a little bit of that so we’ll be feeling very adventurous in this
Car it is a little bit smaller than the normal Land Cruiser but it is more than big enough for us to jump into the car get into the countryside and really experience Central Mongolia so let’s go
All right now that we’ve made it out of the capital out of UL Batar I figured I’ll let you guys in on the plan so we have rented out this Land Cruiser for the next 3 days over those 3
Days we plan to go about 800 km through Central Mongolia today’s Journey should take us hopefully to an end point of the mini GOI it’s called a bit of a desert area and we plan to Camp there
Tonight because this Land Cruiser actually has a popup roof tent which we will show you guys a little later in this video and then tomorrow the hope is to go a little bit further see the ancient capital city of Korum and then end tomorrow at a campground hopefully near a
Lake and then the final day we’ll make our way all the way back to latar so total of about 800 km it should be an interesting Journey we hope to have mostly paved roads along the way but I
Think we’re definitely going to hit some unpaved roads at times as well and this journey is just it’s not something you kind I expected to be doing while we’re here in Mongolia because I think this is something that we just didn’t have the confidence to do on our own completely like
Unguided and self-led until we had gone into the GOI desert and if you guys caught our last video you saw us go to the GOI and I think we just got a good feel for like what the area
Is like what amenities we can expect like what are the roads like can we get food along the way all those little things we’ve got a pretty good idea now of what we can expect on the road so I
Feel like we have the confidence to do this but I am still definitely a little nervous it’s a big adventure and we’re just completely by ourselves like the only people we can rely on for this are us you feel good about it I feel great it’s it’s been a long time since
We’ve uh like since we any of us have driven a car yeah we haven’t been driving a vehicle in a very long time yeah traveling fulltime it’s not like you have the luxury of having your own
Personal car so having this car is uh is a big change I feel good about it I feel really good I think it’s going to be a good few days oh no we missed it first first turn we missed Ito na this
Oh God now we get to turn around on the highway yeah can’t wait yeah the nice thing about doing this by ourselves like unguided is that we can just stop wherever we want to stop and like make
Up our own kind of routs and I think we have a good opportunity to see a pretty cool place here in central Mongolia very popular touristy spot I’m not I don’t know too much about it I just
Know it’s going to be a beautiful drive although this a beautiful drive is a lot of bumpiness right now uh we have now officially made it onto Mongol Fest famous natural roads which is basically dirt just dirt just freedom freedom decided to switch to drivers cuz I was getting
Way too car sick and I have never driven off road before what a cool place to do it for my first time I’m loving this just leave me here I’m good this is great we
Figure I want to fly the Drone Nicole wants to drive why don’t we just switch and do it that way it’s way better way easier well I’m not getting sick and M’s happy with his toy it’s
Perfect so one of the best parts about having your own self- loved Adventure is that you can go anywhere you want however a con is you don’t exactly always know where to go so we stopped
Here at the head of the hoodside National Park which is our first stop for the day and we are actually at the info center so we get a bit of an idea and understanding of what to do
And where to go because this is a massive area beautiful area but absolutely massive well that was was so interesting so hustai National Park was actually created specifically to help a certain breed of horse actually like come back from the brink of Extinction very close to
Extinction the horse is called prol walsky horse I’m really not sure I’m saying that right and it is actually the last remaining wild horse in the entire world like the last remaining wild horse breed which is wild to me um so they actually have them here they’ve got
About 400 now this is a conservation area they have been trying to increase the number of pres walsky horses that exist around the world um for a number of decades now and that is like why this entire National Park was created it sounds so beautiful we learned a lot about
The horse population at the information center but we didn’t learn much about where we should drive within hustai National Park so we just hopped in the car and follow the best looking natural road to check out the park from our car and scope out a spot to stop for lunch
Cool oh my God oh my God I’m sorry that you guys aren’t any closer there’s about 20 wasps going around the camera right now they just seem to love the camera so that’s as close as you’re getting so we don’t get eaten that is so weird why do they love it so
Much well you guys i’ like to say it’s incredibly peaceful out here but I feel like the bees that are swarming around the camera putting me a little bit on edge I’m not going to lie I was envisioning like sitting out my chairs enjoying the scenery eating my sandwich but if I stand
Still too long all the bees come and try to eat my sandwich so peaceful in every aspect except for the insects um but it’s still really nice out here mhm I I kind of picture this to be where they filmed you know the sound of music I don’t know if you’re watching that
You’re old enough to remember that movie I think that’s Austria but you know I don’t know yeah but I it’s just the hills here really remind me of just that scene where she’s you know spinning around then she goes the hills are alive with the sound of music alive sound
Of our chances of seeing the Wild Horses by the way are basically zero I guess during the day when it’s warm like this they go into the woods and they eat the best time to see them if you are coming here and you really want to see Wild Horses it’s
First thing in the morning and at the end of night uh by the Water Source you okay okay yeah okay but what I do see are a couple of I think deer they look so beautiful just up on the hill this little family of four deer that we’re we’re just
We’re just watching them as we stand here and eat our sandwiches with the bees you okay over there why is no one here where is everyone is it working the bees love our camera for some reason is it working I think
So okay now run into the car before they come back the HS are alive with the sound of music that was scary we escaped the Beast we started landing on my hands and on my phone that’s
Fine now we just have to make sure we didn’t get any in the car I don’t think we have any in the car right I think we’ll just have to enjoy the Mongolian landscape from inside the car I all it’s
Getting really hot all of a sudden oh my God okay I was less than fun at the end okay hudai national park I think it’s a wi ouch ouch but we should get probably get out of here ready I think so let’s go
So we want to stop and get a coffee I thought You’ show you guys what uh we’re working with when we try and stop and get coffee here so this is the highway that we were just
On right and uh here’s our view this is the store that we’re pretty sure has coffee in it besides that this is like the side of the road town here looking at her there’s not too much along these brick stretches of Highway except these like small little
Towns with shops along them and I’m so glad that we did the go desit here last week and kind of know what to expect uh in terms of like roadside convenience store type shops I don’t know if there’s coffee might have to go to a different place oh maybe just beer
Just beer beer beer beer beer sausages cheese yogurt but no coffee all right well you win some you lose some let’s try somewhere else all right to what else you got for us where are you Cofe success you see a big pig where
There is that another Pig down there I can’t tell the is that a pig looks like a big pig oh it’s a pig in a mud puddle oh my god wow this is like Pig Nation here oh my God they’re literally
Playing in the puddle oh my gosh what are you doing guys get out of the puddle what are you doing is that a nice puddle hot the hot day hot day to be a pig oh hear one at me
So the bad news is it looks like we’ve hit some sort of rainy patch summer rain storm and I heard that those could be really bad if uh if they if you get caught in
Them and uh have nowhere to go but we’re okay in this car the good news is it smells really nice honestly all the things you’re going to come up against on this trip I really hadn’t
Anticipated rain it is so loud in here it’s kind of freaking me out I do not love being on the highway in the rain especially the Mongolian highways where you can’t see the roads like there’s just so many places with potholes they’re already hard to see chances
Of popping a tire are ridiculously high and they feel like they got way higher I feel like we can almost like see though where it’s going to like I can see bright sky in the distance and Mongolia is like the land of blue skies so like I I don’t think it’s going
To last forever but I don’t love this we’re coming bright Sky we’re coming this job I think we might be through it yeah that’s how it stays green here that’s how it stays green so there’s lots of toll
Rolls here in Mongolia we have no idea how to pay them how how much they are we will see this is the first one where I think there’s actually a human being here to take our money hello H 1,000 oh okay 1,000 do we have a 1000 thank
You than seem kind of confused I think we seem confused maybe we pay later and we just paid this many he’s like sweet got 1 th000 well he gave me a receipt yeah he like handed us a receipt before
We gave him money I don’t know man whatever a thousand’s like nothing so 50 cents so so it’s fine if we did it wrong while Mongolia came through with the weather which I think I expected yeah given that it’s always blue skies here and it’s just opened up these incredible views like
Mt Central Mongolia is definitely showing us its beauty today I think it’s it’s because how of how green it is and all the mountains around us it’s so beautiful I feel like a bunch of the mountain
Is like buried yeah yeah yeah it’s like there was a mountain range here and they’ve all been buried and all we’re seeing are the peaks of these mountains around the surrounded by Green like uh Fields yeah and the amount of livestock so there are more horses than people in Mongolia
More sheep than Mongolian people more goats than M Mongolian people like all of these things and man we are getting it today like we have just seen so much Liv on this drive it’s remarkable it’s really adding to the full Mongolian experience when you see all these beautiful horses just
Roaming and grazing just by themselves there’s nobody else around with them there’s no humans or anything around with them they’re just on their own so today how far are we going 260 km total yeah something around that yeah um and we’ve been taking our dear sweet time of course
Because we’re like putting up the Drone and just getting beautiful shots and stuff and obviously stopping as we need um but it is taking a long time to C 260 km yeah I mean I admit that’s like
It really is on us yeah it’s mostly our fault but also there’s a lot of potholes but there’s also a lot of potholes so it kind of limits you from going too too fast yeah yeah wow there’s some
Of them I swear I could swallow up a small car it’s actually kind of scary like it’s kind of scary I’m glad we’re in a big vehicle and if we did fall into one like we would pop a tire
And get lifted up but we’d be fine this is the hardest thing right now is that I want to soak in the surroundings because it’s so beautiful here but at the same time I need to keep my
Eyes like on the road all the time cuz you never know when a butthole will come up yeah I guess that’s the benefit of having a guide you can just like look out the window as much as you want
Hello thank you bye-bye okay so in order to get into the area of the mini goby that we want to go to camp we had to pay 9,000 togc for entrance in with a car I think if you just go as a human it’s
3,000 but with a vehicle N9 so we have officially made it to mini GOI otherwise known as elen Sarai I’m not sure if I’m saying that right definitely not actually now I think about it but it is I
Think the other name is Bayan GOI basically this is like the uh Gobi Desert that you can get to if you don’t have time to go to the actual GOI desert what’s interesting about this place is
That on one side it’s like sand dunes and on the other side it’s insanely Green Fields so it’s such a interesting mix like a collision of different Landscapes and uh we are now uh trying to find a place to basically Camp around this area and I’m just now going over grass yeah I
Realized earlier I think I said we were going to like a campground we are not going to a campground there from what I know there are no C campgrounds in Mongolia this is just like it’s all just camp
Where you want wild camping so it’s just that we wanted to camp in this area I’m calling that a campground campground to us but there’ll be no extra amenities or anything like that it’s not
Like we pay for a campsite um we’re just going to rock up somewhere and hope that we can stay there for the night we are officially uh transitioning from dirt to sand woo I feel like I’m roaming
Around a golf course with a lot of sand pits right now this is kind of scary it’s very green and very very Brown at the same time and it is a little bit scary thank goodness the Land Cruiser is a
4×4 capable so that should be able to help us out if there’s anything there any problems but honestly there’s lots of little nooks here I’m thinking that could be a nice place to Camp all
Right okay I think it’s easier to just get out and take a look around see what we can get this big truck into too what a cool spot hey I mean do you think we can get her up here yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah cuz this would be cool look at this far here might just run over a shrub or two but like this would be nice this yeah this is cool I don’t know what it is but maybe it’s just the Canadian
In me that I feel like I have to tent beside trees and feel like I’m in a forest and high up and high up yeah I like this spot this is pretty cool you think we can get here like with the truck I think
We can get up here yeah somehow if you we get up here this is awesome it’s so beautiful here this is my first pick we’ve got to get the car he’s over there but he’s going to come around here
We’ve got to get it from here up that very big hill and on top of that so we’re going to let me do this one by himself cuz I don’t really want to be in the car right now looks a little
Scary what do you think you just going to go for it I think so I think I got in 4×4 mode so what’s the worst thing going to happen what’s the worst wait I think I’m
Going to run up so I can catch a frontal a front view of you okay okay SEC oh God this might be the worst decision we make today okay be careful oh boy I like this very much that was so
Easy you made that look so easy yeah the the car is awesome I think I think we found our spot for the night oh my gosh I was so afraid turns out you didn’t you be afraid
That looked so simple yeah it was so good it looked like it was going to be so much steeper than it ended up being okay well we’ve made it to our home for the night pretty cool super cool
Let that was easy all right now that we have got this girl all set up let’s take you around I want to show you all her bells and whistles give you a little truck to her let’s start with the tent
Cuz we just put her up I’m so excited about this so it’s a honestly it’s going to be I think quite big for the two of us to sleep in Hough we’ll see tonight it just pops straight up it’s so easy to
Put up you just like undo the latches and then poof the whole tank comes up T it came with a couple of pillows and we’ve got sleeping bags and blankets provided as well there are these
Yeah look at that mesh windows on the inside so it’s like a screen and then of course you can also drop this window down to fully cover it and keep the warmth in if we need to although I’m not sure
We’re going to need to it is a very warm night so there’s actually the two windows on the side here and then there’s also two windows on like the front and back ends of the truck which would be
Awesome cuz I think it means we could have some really cool views in the morning like just wake up and without having to get out of bed we can just see the gorgeous view so I’m super excited
About that so tent is going to be awesome we have never stayed in an over like in a in a rooftop tent before that’s what they’re called I’m so excited to give a try for the first time here
In Mongolia and then let’s bring you around back so this is a Toyota Land Cruiser pra and I think for us one of the biggest perks about this guy is how much storage it has we’re only two people we
Don’t need a lot of storage but there’s so much room back here as you can see we have like eight bottles of water that’s four for drinking water and four gray water um and then everything that
We could possibly need for a couple of days out here in in case we get stuck um yeah and obviously we’re fully living in here so so there are sleeping bags in here table and chairs pots and pans everything we need for cooking which hopefully we’ll get to you very soon if you
Had more than two people you could actually fit two more passengers back here um but I will say like I think it would be squishy for stuff because you need obviously a place to put all your stuff
And as you can see we have filled the back with all of our belongings that we just want kind of access to during the day uh so it would be squishy I think with four but you could do it and then you
Would just have to get an extra tent I think and like pitch it down in the ground whenever you go to sleep okay so you guys have seen this angle all day so this is the passenger seat cars in Mongolia
Are very strange you guys they are mostly imported from Japan so they’re right-and Drive even though you drive on the right hand side of the road here so initially I didn’t notice it too much but on a
Drive like today it’s actually really not great because it means that when you’re trying to like pass on the highway the driver can’t see because they’re trying to like look around everything to see around vehicles in front so it’s not a great setup it’s a little bit interesting to get used to
But but it’s fine just takes a little adjusting and then up front I guess the only thing really to note up here is that this truck does have a snorkel so I mean I really don’t think we’re going
To be needing this but it does have a snorkel if you were in a pinch we actually had a really hard time finding a reasonbly priced rental car here in Mongolia so if you are interested in renting like this same vehicle or something similar we ended up getting it from Eternal Nomads we’ll
Put the contact info down in the description for nura who is the contact that we use there so far we are absolutely in love with this vehicle it has been so so good to us today God you’re you started
Moving and I saw this big black mess look at the baby goat oh my God hi sweetheart it’s okay bud oh my gosh ni is like moving the vehicle to get it to like a flatter spot and I’m like what is
This black mass under the tire and then this guy pops on so he was under the car he was under that wheel oh my goodness like you literally started moving and I’m like stop up yeah I touch his head
I’m so jealous he’s got a little paint on him he does have paint on him why do you have paint on you little guy you scared us oh man oh my gosh he’s making little noises do you think he wants a
Pringle what’s up buddy oh man you want a pringle are you okay oh no Pringles Pringles Pringles or a no go no bud you can’t go under the car that’s the danger zone buddy that’s the D oh god oh no now
We’ll never be able to move it did you lose your herd I think we’ve adopted a baby goat oh this is not a problem I ever expected to have there’s a goat stuck on the car one eternity later good
Boy that’s a good boy look him go he doesn’t seem that frazzled anymore I thought you were stressed so it’s too windy for the tent the tent used to come down and it’s also too windy to make any food because we can’t turn the stove on cuz it will light
Tonight’s dinner is leftover chili stew we made it a couple of days ago and had enough leftovers to just bring here which is perfect cuz we can just heat it up have some buns poof dinner also I’m not sure if you mentioned this earlier but all this camping equipment the stove and like
The pots and pans and all these dishes and plates and the chairs and the chairs and the table um it was actually also provided uh when we rented the vehicle so value for money I think this
Is pretty good besides the wind which uh made us put our tent down yeah was a little bit premature I guess I thought we were going to lose the tent and also the stools they’re the size of
The size for Hobbits besides all that I think it was actually a really nice day it’s kind of cool there’s like no one around around us but um I don’t feel like unsafe because there’s quite a
Few G just kind on Horizon but in this immediate area we are definitely by ourselves uhhuh so in a pinch we can find help if we need to yeah but otherwise we can kind of get our our own
Like Taste of solitude yeah which is uh something that you would find often in uh Mongolia we we’re discovering so it was a little bit gloomy when we got in and I guess the sun was just hiding
Behind the CL clouds but now the sun’s actually coming out just to greet us for the last little bit of light left in the day and uh I think this is a pretty amazing Sunset spot I never knew Central Mongolia could be this beautiful if you showed me this landscape and asked me
Where in the world it was I never would have guessed here yeah that’s true and never would have guessed here yeah yeah earli I was telling Nicole in the car that before we came to Mongolia I thought Mongolia was going to be you know it’s going to be really good
It’s going to be beautiful and it’s going to be stunning I did not expect it to be so incredibly beautiful that the camera and all the photos and videos that we take could not capture it cuz that is happening right now in this moment it is such a beautiful
Sunset in the next video our road trip continues with some more unexpected but very welcomed morning guests a visit back in time to a version of Mongolia that we never thought we’d see and a lot more off-roading in an attempt to see more of this incredible country if you haven’t already
We’d love if you subscribed to join us on the second half of this adventure and many more Adventures to come see you next week any idea how much we pay okay do we pay anything just go
Through uh I guess go through I don’t know okay everyone else is just going yeah right behind me just I mean I guess it’s not a all I’m sorry I’m sorry we’re foreigners we’re foreigners I’m sorry
In order to really test our travel skills, we are are headed off to travel alone in Central Mongolia for the next three days. So much happened on this adventure that we had to split it into two videos! This first video covers day 1 and gives a look into what Mongolia is really like to travel in. Mongolia is one of the least densely populated countries in the world, so outside of the capital city the people are few and far between. While that kind of solitude is something we love, it also means that getting lost or stranded on our own could be really dangerous!
To make sure we were as prepared for this adventure as possible, we rented a 4X4 vehicle from Eternal Nomads that came with a roof top tent and all the equipment needed to live out of this truck. We loved being self contained and off-road capable – the latter bit is absolutely essential in order to travel independently in Mongolia! If you want to rent a vehicle from Eternal Nomads on your own trip to Mongolia, you can contact Nurka via What’sApp at +976 9419 3612.
Our journey on this first day of the road trip begins in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. We quickly learned that the highways in Mongolia are no joke – people drive at fast speeds but there are a lot of pot holes to dodge, so we really had to pay attention! We stopped at Hustai National Park to search for the last wild horses and ended up fighting off a swarm of wasps all through lunch (thanks, Mongolia) before hitting the road again. If you’re wondering what Mongolia is like, then this video will give you a pretty good idea. We make our way through small towns in search of coffee, come across every farm animal imaginable (except there are no farms around), and see more epic Mongolian landscapes.
After some off-roading in the sand, we find our home for the night in an area commonly referred to as the “Mini Gobi” because there are small sand dunes here for those who can’t make it as far as the actual Gobi Desert (if you want to check out the real Gobi, we had a pretty epic time on our visit https://youtu.be/2u3JzwUFnRI). I know it took a while, but we finally give you a full tour of our Land Cruiser once we’ve got the rooftop tent up!
We ended up in Mongolia on a bit of a whim and very last minute, so we didn’t really know the best things to do in Mongolia before arriving here. We are SO glad we rented a car and drove through Central Mongolia on our own as part of our adventures in this country. This is definitely making out “top things to do in Mongolia” list, and would recommend this experience to anyone traveling in Mongolia. But, it might be best to join a group tour first just so you know what to expect once you’re out in the middle of Mongolia. This is a rugged and rough country because of the terrain and low population density, so you’ve got to be prepared to handle whatever might come your way.

What a wonderful video 🏞️🌋🔥🌀 You guys absolutely crushed it. OMHG!!!
That's a real adventure. In a foreign land in Central Asia driving a 4×4 and exploring the frontiers!😅😊👍
Thank you so much, i felt like i travelled with you guys in the car 😂. Absolutely great ❤.
Great video! Looks like the kind of place that if your dog (or goat) ran away, you’d still be able to see it for days 😁
Love it that you two picked up a early Toyota Prado because the newer generations suck at offroad❤
we love ur vid but please dont go off road in areas that has little green areas with weeds in elsen tasarkhai group of people trying to save that places from becoming deserts
Beautiful drone action . You guys have too much energy. Welcome to my beautiful country.
oh wow i thought u guys travelled during winter
What an amazing unique experience! Love this Mongolia adventure!
Hope you had a fantastic time here in Mongolia! Cheers from Mongolia 🇲🇳!
nice beautiful thanks guys
Wow another amazing video of your journey. I'm truly grateful that you are enjoying our country and staying positive all the time. Even though there were several obstacles on your trip hehe. Also, the car choice was great. Land cruisers are highly known offroad cars lol. Is there another video coming up about your journey in Mongolia? Cuz you don't disappoint and i'm excited to see it
I hope you visit again! I hope you had an enjoyable stay in my beautiful country 🙂
absolutely wonderful and loving 🥰
the little goat has a paint on it bc it's got an owner! the nomads separate each others' livestock by painting theirs in a different color so it is easier to spot who belongs to who !
7:25 The background reminds me of a Microsoft screensaver. The scenery of Mongolia is incredible and vast!
don't worry. Ulaanbaatar cars do not charge tolls when entering and exiting Ulaanbaatar
I think that goat under your car because it was hot? Idk. It looks like he liked the shadows under the car.
I am mongolian and i live abroad your video made me homesick ❤
Y'alls vlogging get better each time. It's amazing….been following you all since the beginning. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for roughing it out in Mongolia for the viewers guys. I like watching the steppe. Yep, looks like Austria except for the bees.
What an amazing view and sunset from your camping spot. And you guys didn't realize your fully loaded rental also came with complementary GPS, goat protection services. 😂
You guys are truly amazing! Such great adventurers!
this video has whole lot of effort, nice job guys!
your first video of Mongolia series popped up on my recommended today, and as a Mongolian citizen living abroad, this video makes me so happy to see travelers around the world come visit and see the beautiful nature 💕 and it also made me miss home, in a good way 🥹 I wish you guys all the best and hope you’ll come back to Mongolia again 🙂
I hope your trip was amazing ❤
