JAPAN HAS CHANGED | 10 Tourism Events in Tokyo during Spring & Summer Season | Travel Update 2024

Hi, I’m Toshi from Japan and tourist guide for foreigners. In this video, I will show you 10 Tourism Events in 2024 in Tokyo during Spring & Summer season.

Before I dive into the main content, let me give you a sneak peek into Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital and the largest city, attracting a majority of international visitors. In today’s video, we’ll be unveiling 10 must-visit events in the Tokyo area – both popular ones and hidden gems – perfect for our global audience.

I’ve specifically focused on events happening in spring and summer of 2024, with researched details on dates and locations. By watching this video, you’ll not only discover the must-visit tourist attractions but also uncover fascinating events, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your journey in Japan.

So, make sure to stay with us until the end. So, let’s get started. No1 is Cherry Blossom. Cherry Blossom Viewing called ‘Hanami,’ is a beloved spring tradition in Japan where people gather to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms, indulge in delicious food, and savor drinks.

It has become a cultural spectacle that captivates not only locals but also draws attention from international tourists visiting Japan. Some tourists come to Japan for the purpose of cherry blossom viewing.

In 2024, temperatures across the country are expected to rise from February to March, potentially leading to cherry blossoms blooming at the usual time or even earlier than usual. As of January 2024, it’s anticipated that cherry blossoms will bloom in Tokyo around March 23rd, reaching full bloom by March 30th.

For prime Cherry Blossom Viewing spots in Tokyo, consider Yoyogi Park, Ueno Park, and Meguro River. Yoyogi and Ueno Parks, being spacious, attract families and friends who gather with picnic blankets to enjoy the blossoms, accompanied by drinks and food.

Meguro River, adorned with cherry blossoms along its banks, is ideal for a leisurely stroll while taking in the floral beauty. There are also food stalls along the way, perfect for a pit stop and relaxation. So, mark your calendars for a magical Cherry Blossom Viewing experience in Tokyo.

No2 is GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA. Yokohama, a city that has been a gateway for Japan’s international exchange since its opening, boasts a captivating cityscape with historic buildings, beautiful landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage.

Now, this vibrant city merges the globally acclaimed content, Gundam, with Japan’s exceptional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology at Yokohama’s Yamashita Pier. Running as a limited-time event from December 2020 to the end of March 2024, the ‘GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA’ brings a dream to life – an 18-meter life-sized Gundam that actually moves.

Admission costs 1,650 yen for adults, with an additional 3,300 yen required to climb the Gundam’s deck. Having personally witnessed the joy it brings, my Korean and American friends were thrilled to participate in this event. For Gundam enthusiasts and robot lovers alike, this is an absolute must-visit spot. No3 is Setsubun Festival.

Setsubun, a cherished Japanese event, takes place on February 3rd, symbolizing the wish for everyone’s health and happiness. During this tradition, known as ‘mamemaki,’ people throw roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits, shouting, ‘Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi’ – ‘Demons out, fortune in.’

As the changing of seasons is believed to attract negative energies, symbolized by ‘oni’ or demons, famous personalities gather at the iconic Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa to perform this ritual. It’s a unique opportunity to witness the convergence of tradition and celebrity in a lively bean-throwing spectacle.

Don’t miss the chance to experience Setsubun alongside exploring the wonders of Asakusa. No4 is Koinobori Carp Streamer Village Festival. Koinobori, ornamental carp-shaped windsocks, symbolize the wish for children’s growth and health in Japanese culture.

Imagine the spectacle of 4,000 koinobori gracefully dancing in the wind, creating a breathtaking scene for families and tourists alike. Held annually from late March to early May, this event takes place in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture, just an hour’s drive from Tokyo.

The real highlight is the koinobori swimming gracefully above the river, marking the beginning of early summer. Beyond the mesmerizing koinobori display, the festival offers a rich tapestry of traditional Japanese performances, food stalls, and vibrant events. Especially delightful for children and their families, the ‘Koinobori Carp Streamer Village Festival’ promises a joyous experience.

No5 is Sanja Festival. As one of Tokyo’s largest celebrations, the Sanzya Festival unfolds over three lively days from May 17th to May 19th. Located in the iconic neighborhood of Asakusa, renowned for its Edo-era charm, this festival is a quintessential representation of Tokyo’s early summer vibrancy.

Watch the streets of Asakusa come alive with the spirited Mikoshi procession, showcasing the splendor of Edo’s cultural richness. The term ‘Sanzya refers to the three deities enshrined at Asakusa Shrine, collectively known as ‘Sanzya-sama.’ Immerse yourself in the energetic atmosphere as the festival embodies the essence of traditional Tokyo.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the heart of Asakusa’s culture and history. No6 is Mitama Festival. From July 13th to July 16th, Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine comes alive with the glow of over 30,000 lanterns, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

This annual festival is a heartfelt tribute to the sacred souls of those who sacrificed their lives during World War II for the nation’s sake. Joining over 300,000 visitors, the Mitama Festival has become a Tokyo summer tradition, featuring diverse performances like traditional Bon dances and vibrant mikoshi processions.

The festival, which has been a cherished part of Tokyo’s summer since 1947, honors the enduring spirit of the past while celebrating the vibrant present. Don’t forget to explore the delicious offerings from food trucks dotted around the venue.

The Mitama Festival is more than an event; it’s a poignant commemoration and a lively celebration. So, don’t miss the chance to pay respects and revel in the festive atmosphere at Yasukuni Shrine. No7 is AZABU JUBAN SUMMER NIGHT FESTIVAL.

Known as one of Tokyo’s two major festivals alongside the ‘Mitama Festival’ in the previous chapter, this summer celebration draws around 300,000 attendees annually, becoming a beloved tradition in Azabu juban.

Scheduled for a weekend in late August, this event takes place in the charming neighborhood of Azabu juban, nestled in a high-end residential area with a touch of welcoming charm. The Azabu juban shopping street transforms into a festival ground with a dedicated stage featuring a variety of performances by different groups.

Experience the essence of Japan’s summer as local shops showcase regional specialties, delectable food items, and unique products at charming stalls. From mouthwatering local delicacies to traditional performances, the festival offers a vibrant atmosphere where you can immerse yourself in Japan’s timeless charm.

So, don’t miss out on the festivities and the chance to soak in the nostalgic ambiance of Japan. No8 is Climbing Mt.Fuji. Mount Fuji, standing at approximately 3,700 meters, is not just Japan’s highest peak but also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Throughout the year, this majestic mountain offers breathtaking landscapes and a rich variety of nature, captivating the hearts of people worldwide. Its iconic silhouette has inspired traditional Japanese poetry and woodblock prints, leaving an indelible mark on both Eastern and Western art.

I have a friend from the United States who came all the way to Japan just to climb Mount Fuji, drawn by its beauty and cultural significance. However, keep in mind that climbing is only permitted during specific periods, typically from July to early September in 2024.

Outside this time frame, mountain huts and shops are closed, and climbing becomes a self-responsible endeavor. In case of emergencies, assistance may not be readily available, so plan your climb within the designated season. So, if you’re up for a thrilling adventure and breathtaking views, consider adding Mount Fuji to your Tokyo itinerary.

No9 is Fireworks Festival. Tokyo hosts two major fireworks festivals along the picturesque Sumida River and the Edo River. The Sumida River Fireworks Festival, held in the vibrant Asakusa district, will illuminate the night sky with over 20,000 fireworks on July 24th.

Meanwhile, the Edo River Fireworks Festival, set against the cultural backdrop of Tokyo’s downtown areas, is scheduled for August 24th, featuring another breathtaking display of 20,000 fireworks. Based on my personal experiences attending these events multiple times, a word of caution – post-event crowding can be overwhelming, making public transportation a bit tricky.

A helpful tip is to consider walking a bit from the nearest station or using a less crowded alternative. For instance, for the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, you might want to think about a 25-minute stroll from Asakusa Station to Ueno Station.

So, immerse yourself in the magic of Japan’s summer tradition, create beautiful memories at these spectacular fireworks festivals. No10 is Asakusa Samba Carnival. Picture this – the iconic streets of Asakusa transform into a lively parade route, pulsating with the infectious beats of Samba music.

The venue, Asakusa, a beloved Tokyo hotspot, comes alive in mid-September for this spectacular carnival. Born in 1981 to revitalize the town, the Asakusa Samba Carnival has evolved into one of Japan’s premier events, drawing a whopping 500,000 attendees annually.

An array of passionately choreographed performances that rival even the famed Carnival of Rio de Janeiro. Dazzling costumes, mesmerizing dances – each team brings its unique flair, captivating the audience. What makes it truly special is the fusion of Asakusa’s traditional streets with the dynamic energy of Samba.

Come witness the Samba teams, undeterred by the midsummer heat, dancing with unbridled joy. It’s a spectacle that’s not to be missed.
