This time we will introduce 13 national treasure buildings in the southwestern part of Shiga Prefecture. Shiga Prefecture has been a key point for east-west transportation since ancient times.

It is the prefecture with the most national treasure buildings after Kyoto and Nara prefectures. 1. Hiyoshi Taisha Higashi Hongu Main Hall and 3 other buildings Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Otsu City, Shiga An old shrine built about 2100 years ago The unique Sanno Torii gate with its Yamagata gable welcomes you.

Head shrine of over 3,800 Hiyoshi, Hie, and Sanno shrines nationwide Both the worship hall and main hall of the Nishihongu Shrine were built in 1586. Nishihongu Shrine enshrines Onamuchi, the main god of the country. It has a unique style called Hiyoshi-zukuri, with the left and right eaves shaped like gables. Hiyoshi Shrine has approximately 40 shrines centered on the east and west main shrines. It has been revered as a shrine that protects the Omotekimon gate of Kyoto. Both the worship hall and the main hall of Higashi Hongu were built in 1596. The Higashihongu Shrine enshrines Oyamakui, the god who governs land and agriculture. Located at the foot of Mt. Hiei, it has been considered the guardian of the Tendai sect. 2. Enryakuji Temple Konpon Chudo Enryakuji Temple in Otsu City, Shiga was founded by Saicho in 806. Honen, Eisai, Shinran, Dogen, Nichiren, etc.

The mother mountain of Japanese Buddhism, where the founders of each sect studied. Konpon Chudo has been under renovation for about 10 years since 2016. The inner shrine is a 7-space structure, and the outer hall (Raido) is a 9-space structure. As the name suggests, Ishiyamadera is a temple built on top of a mountain of stones.

The Tahoto Pagoda was donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Built in 1194, it is the oldest Tahoto pagoda in Japan. There are many temples and pagodas lined up on the slope of the mountain, and the grounds are nice for a stroll. 5. Chojuji Temple Main Hall Chojuji Temple in Konan City, Shiga

It is an ancient temple of the Tendai sect, founded in the first half of the 8th century. Built by Louben on the orders of Emperor Shomu The main hall was built in the early Kamakura period. A pure Japanese-style building with a corridor on all sides and five rooms in both girders and beams. It is the smallest but oldest of the main halls of Konan Sanzan. The appearance of the chozubachi is also nice.

I also want to check out the worship hall and main shrine of Hakusan Shrine, which is right next door. It is said that the three-storied pagoda was taken to Azuchi Castle by Nobunaga Oda. 6. Jorakuji Temple Main Hall and 1 other building Jorakuji Temple in Konan City, Shiga

Founded by Louben at the beginning of the 8th century under the orders of Emperor Genmei. The main hall was built in 1360. It is a large hall with a sense of weight, with seven girders and six beams. Go up the stairs on the left side of the main hall The three-storied pagoda was built in 1400. A Japanese-style building with a height of just under 23 meters and three rooms on all sides. It is said that the Sanmon gate was relocated to Fushimi Castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. 7. Zensuiji temple main hall Zensui-dera Temple in Konan City, Shiga

Tendai sect temple founded around 710 One of the three Konan mountains along with Chojuji Temple and Jorakuji Temple. The main hall was built in 1366. In the main hall with seven spaces between columns and five five spaces between beams. A beautiful building with no front shrine and decorated with wooden doors. When Emperor Kanmu was ill, Saicho offered the water here.
