Things to do in Shizuoka before NISMO Festival

Hello! Today we will be sightseeing around Shizuoka. Our first stop is Nihondaira Ropeway (日本平ロープウェイ). Let’s go! (5-min ride) Arrived! From here, we will visit the Kunouzan Toshigu Shrine (久能山東照宮). This shrine has a history of over 400 years, and is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). Ieyasu founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603 and brought

A long period of civil wars to an end and united all of Japan. The admission ticket for the shrine costs ¥500. There are many large steps. Made it to the main entrance. A handprint of Tokugawa Ieyasu. His estimated height was between 155 – 159 cm. The shrine is very extensive

And consists of a large number of bright red buildings decorated with gold accents and colorful carvings and paintings. Amulets / lucky charms. Ema: wooden plaques used for writing wishes to the deity of a Shinto shrine. The beautifully decorated shrine buildings were designated as a National Treasure in 2010. Taking the ropeway back.

As there is no road access to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the shrine is not directly reachable by car. Kunozan Shrine can either be accessed from the south by climbing approximately 1,000 stone steps or by ropeway. The ropeway costs ¥1,250 for a round trip ticket. We secured the front row on our way back 🙂

The view here was actually a bit scary. Arrived. We stopped by the gift shop and discovered Chabacco (tea). Getting some orange flavored ice cream. It didn’t really taste like orange, lol. Take a break at the bus station. It was a Saturday and the parking lot was pretty packed.

Next we will stop by the Nihondaira Yume Terrace (日本平夢テラス). This beautiful wooden structure was designed by Kuma Kengo and Associates, who also built the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. Completed since 2018, the Nihondaira Yume Terrace is a popular open-air observation deck in Shizuoka that offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view overlooking Mt. Fuji

And iconic spots including Suruga Bay. Back on the road. Our last stop of the day is the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre (静岡県富士山世界遺産センター). They don’t have a parking lot so we had to park elsewhere. Arrived. It is a gorgeous museum dedicated to the iconic Mt. Fuji,

With interactive exhibits, an observation deck, library, gift shop and cafe. The library. The observation hall. Mt. Fuji covered by clouds. Gift shop and cafe. Time to grab dinner. For dinner, we stopped by Sawayaka, a famous hamburger restaurant in Shizuoka. The configuration of this parking lot is a bit strange. 30-min wait; not bad.

Approximately ¥1,800 per person for dinner. Delicious meal and attentive staff. Heading out with a full belly. To avoid heavy traffic at Nismo Festival, we will be staying in Susuno, Shizuoka (about 40-min away from Fuji Speedway) for the night. Arrived to Hotel Just One Susuno (ホテルジャストワン 裾野). ¥12,500 / night for 2 people.

Tiny bathroom. We will be heading out at 6 a.m. the next day. See you in the next video!
