Experiencing Jakarta for the First Time! š®š© Indonesia Travel Vlog 2024
We’ve been exploring the wonderful countryĀ of Indonesia for the last two months. Our adventure began in Bali, and sinceĀ then, we’ve been traveling across Java,Ā Ā discovering the diverse cultures, amazingĀ volcanoes, and delicious cuisine along the way. With the end of our visas quickly approaching,Ā Ā
We’ll finally arrive in the largestĀ city we’ve ever experienced: Jakarta. We have just woken up inĀ our little woodland cabin. I don’t know if you can hear the birds chirping. They’re fake. Yeah, they’re fake. We’re staying in a pod capsule that they callĀ a cabin, but it is not. It’s a little box.
We’re taking the economy trainĀ from Bandung to Jakarta today. [It] takes fifteen minutes to get there,Ā Ā probably like five minutes to getĀ a Grab, so we should get going. This place is super cute, though. There’s, like, little workspacesĀ and a cafe, cool vending machines.
They’ve even got something called a urineĀ bag, which I don’t know what that is. Well, it’s like if you’re on a train and there’sĀ no restroom and you have to go, you got to go. I actually think I should buy one. The mystery of the urine bag has been solved.
Terima kasih. Selamat pagi. Alright, we got the check. Now to go get a Grab. [upbeat music] Is that everything? Oh, and your martabak. Oh, yeah. Terima kasih. Terima kasih. Thank you so much. Oh, yay! We did it. You didn’t even need help this time.
I know! This is way lessĀ stressful than the last one. [laidback music] It’s your favorite. Yup, sure is. These little escalators that areĀ like slanted-down ramps are notĀ Ā our favorite ‘cause they justĀ feel so awkward to stand on.
We’re at our platform. I feel like the economyĀ trains are always more fun than the VIP trains. I think this is our train. Maybe show it to these gentlemen. Hello. Premium 1. This is Premium 4. 3-2-1. Oh, the one down here? Okay. Thank you. Terima kasih. Oh, “PRE” stands for Premium. What?
That’s what he said. He called it Premium. Premium. So it’s going to look like this. That’d be amazing. All the way at the end. Last train. 1C and 1D. Oh, there’s nobody here. And so it’s the opposite.Ā We’re back at the front again? Yeah. Okay.
This is way better than the last economy train. We made it. We made it. So this is much different thanĀ the last economy train we took. The last economy train was like bench seats,Ā and two seats were flipped facing each other,Ā Ā so it was us and then, youĀ know, another group of people.
There were so many people that it was thereĀ was like people sitting on the ground- Standing. Yeah. I stood for a little bit becauseĀ they tried to take two people who, I guess,Ā Ā didn’t have assigned seats and move themĀ out of a seat so that I could sit there,Ā Ā
And I was just like, “No,Ā I’ll stand. It’ll be fine.” One benefit of being on the last car is thatĀ Ā we won’t have a ton of peopleĀ walking by us, which is great. We’re just going to kind of be left alone andĀ chill in our peace, but I feel like we’ll alsoĀ Ā
Be the last car to get the cappuccino cart, andĀ I need a cappuccino something fierce right now. I don’t even know that there’sĀ actual coffee or caffeine in them. It might just be coffee flavoring and sugar, but- That placebo effect works, if so. Yeah, it sure does make me feel better. [upbeat music]
We made it to Jakarta! We’re finally here. This is our last stop in Indonesia, unfortunately,Ā and we’ve only got a week to explore,Ā Ā so we’re going to make the best of this andĀ start by getting checked into our hostel. I hope it’s still good.
Alright, so this is our biggest cityĀ yet. Bangkok’s 8.9 million, this is 11. Wow. Yeah. I passed out. Not really feelingĀ tip-top, and I’m not sure why. Sorry you don’t feel well. It’s okay. [upbeat music] Terima kasih. Alright. Got a little market, little food court. So it’s through here?
Oh, how cute! Wow, we are literallyĀ in the middle of everything. Yeah. Oh yeah, there it is. Oh, cool. Oh, and we get little Boba shoes. Ah, here we are. Oh, the light turns onĀ automatically. It’s so high-tech. Yeah. Oh, and there’s greeting music. [greeting in foreign language over loudspeaker] That’s so cool.
[greeting over loudspeaker] HiĀ there, welcome Bobo. This is Inda,Ā Ā and I’ll be your friend during yourĀ stay here at Bobobox. Enjoy your stay. Thanks! That’s so cool. I figured I could give you guys the tour. We’ve got this little nice desk, slashĀ workstation, slash storage- luggage. This is our little bunk.
It is king-size. You do haveĀ to kind of crawl in here,Ā Ā but it’s nice ‘cause you canĀ sit up completely straight. I don’t know if Mike will be able to. Got this little LCD, which is kind of cool. Let’s see what you can do with this.
That’s kind of nice. Kind of relaxing. Makes youĀ Ā forget that you’re in a cubeĀ in a warehouse, basically. It doesn’t take much to impressĀ me, but I think that’s pretty cool. Also, let’s set some mood lighting. So it’sĀ on white right now. Let’s see what this does.
Oh, look at that. That’s so cool.Ā It’s all like tie-dye and stuff. We’re checked into our little pod here at Bobobox,Ā and yeah, I think I was just a little dehydrated. Feeling a little bit better. Had someĀ cocoa water, had some regular water,Ā Ā
And we were both very hungry, so there’sĀ that little food court that’s downstairs? Yeah. I think we’re going to go check thatĀ out and see what they’ve got for food. [laidback music] I wonder how old that bread is? Yeah, it does not look freshly baked. It sure does not.
It looks like mummified bread. I do not think that’s freshly baked. Okay, so we can either do local or KFC. You want to walk around and figure it out? Yeah, let’s see what they got. So, there wasn’t a ton of food optionsĀ in the little food court below our hotel.
Seems like there’s a bunch of food out thisĀ way, so we’re going to go check that out. There is so many people having amazing times. And so many cute bikes. I can’t wait! Yeah, Ashley’s dying to ride one ofĀ these bikes and get a hat to match. Look at all these things.
Okay, so here’s that Cafe BraviaĀ or Batvia? Batavia. Batava? This place is super cute. I’m gladĀ we’re in the middle of everything. We sure are. Like, literally right outsideĀ of our doorstep. It’s crazy. So, that right there is one of the mostĀ popular tourist monuments in the city,Ā Ā
As you can see, and rightĀ over there is our hostel. We spent the next 45 minutesĀ exploring the surrounding areas,Ā Ā searching for delicious food, evenĀ if we did get a little distracted. Those cats are so pretty. Hi, babies! Aw. Mike told me I’m not allowed to petĀ cats anymore, and it’s really hard.
So, we’ve admitted defeat. FindingĀ street food has proved a little bitĀ Ā more challenging than we expected,Ā mainly because of the time of day. Lots of stuff doesn’t open until fiveĀ or six, so we’re going to go to theĀ Ā
Batavia Cafe that we mentioned just a minuteĀ ago, and yeah, check out what they’ve got. They’re very well-known. Food should be delicious. This will be, IĀ think, like, the second time we’ve eaten,Ā Ā like, elevated or fancy IndonesianĀ food, so hopefully it’s good.
Most of the time, we just eat at theĀ warungs, and that has been amazing,Ā Ā so hopefully, this lives up to the hype. [classical music] Wow, it feels like we stepĀ back in time. It’s so cool. [classical music] So fancy. Hello. [classical music] Hello. Thank you. Thank you. Enjoy. Thank you. Terima kasih.
Wow, this place is so fancy! And we gotĀ a view of the courtyard; that’s awesome. Alright, let’s read aboutĀ the history of this place. This historical building was commissionedĀ by the Dutch East India Company in 1805Ā Ā to serve as a residence for high-rankingĀ officials and a center for administration.
After being purchased by a French native, itĀ was transformed into an impressive art gallery. Finally, a combined vision was realized, and itĀ is now the cafe and restaurant that you see today. The upper rooms are constructed with JavaneseĀ Teakwood, giving it a rich historical feel.
It’s the second oldest building inĀ Jakarta after the Jakarta History Museum,Ā Ā which is located across Fatahillah Square. It is trĆØs chic and expensive, but that’s okay. Oh, it’s bitterballen! And it’s got the BatikĀ tablecloth. It’s very pretty. I like this place. Nasi campur meneer, please. But, actually, for the taste is spicy, so-
That’s perfect. Yeah, we like spicy. Yeah, yeah. Extra pedas. Spicy is good. This is a very fancy restaurant.Ā It feels like a museum. It feels like we stepped back in time.Ā It’s so cool, and the service is great. Yeah, the service is amazing and very,Ā Ā
Very friendly, and it is nice thatĀ we can see out to this little square. We’ve got this nice little window view watchingĀ Ā all the people with their brightlyĀ colored bikes and hats riding around.. I love each place’s little,Ā like, quirky things, you know? Yeah. It is funny.
This is like the fanciestĀ restaurant we’ve been in. This is, like, old-school fancy. Yeah, I like it. This does feel very old-schoolĀ fancy, like The Great Gatsby. Very roaring 20s. Oh, wow. That looks good. What?! I got the Batavia punch, and itĀ comes in a little tiki glass.
Smells amazing. Oh, yeah, this is a win. I’m glad I got this as opposed toĀ that other thing I was going to get. And a soda water, too. IĀ only have one gold chalice,Ā Ā but I have one gold chaliceĀ and one Tiki ceramic chalice. This is a traditional Javanese drink, I believe.
So, this is one of Jakarta’s signatureĀ herbal drinks. It’s got nutmeg, cardamom,Ā Ā lemongrass, and palm sugar,Ā so sounds really interesting. It’s also got a little cinnamonĀ stick, so I’m going to stir that in. He asked if I wanted it hot or cold, but it’sĀ so hot out, so I obviously went with cold.
Oh. Oh, wow. That is so good. YouĀ can definitely taste the nutmeg. It’s almost spicy at the back of your throat,Ā but like only very, very, very slightly. Mm. That’s really good. You should try it. So we got two traditional dishes. We’ve gotĀ our bakwan jagung, I hope I said that right,Ā Ā
Which is basically just a cornĀ fritter, and they look amazing. We’ve actually had cornĀ fritters before in Indonesia,Ā Ā and they didn’t look anything likeĀ this, so I’m interested to try those,Ā Ā and then we’ve also got our nasiĀ campur meneer, which looks fabulous.
I almost wish we had gotten two because IĀ don’t want to share this, but I’m going to. Let’s try this- oh! This huge corn fritter first. Nailed it. [Can’t] take me to fancy places. Mm. It’s good. Okay, so these are good. I actuallyĀ think I prefer the corn fritters thatĀ Ā
We’ve had before that were almost like-Ā they look like a little pancake kind of. These are really fresh and really, IĀ guess, corn-tasting, which makes sense,Ā Ā but I actually like the flavor of theĀ other ones that we’ve had in Bali. They’ve got like a lot ofĀ seasoning, and I don’t know,Ā Ā
Those are just really, really good,Ā so they’re completely different. These are really, really nice. YouĀ can tell that they’re high quality,Ā Ā but yeah, let’s try the nasi campur. So, I don’t know what I want to try first. I think I’m going to go with the veggiesĀ ‘cause this is typically my favorite part.
It’s very fresh and very, very crunchy. Let me try this, um, sate. I’m going to try itĀ without the rice first just to see what it’s like. Mm. Really good? Mm-hmm. Wow, this is hands-down the best sateĀ that I’ve had in my two months in Indonesia.
The peanut sauce is unreal. That is so delicious.Ā I just want a plate of those, honestly. Mm-hmm. This is really good, too. It’s peanut-y,Ā Ā it tastes like there’s some kefirĀ lime leaves in there, maybe. Uh, it’s a little bit salty.Ā Obviously, very crunchy.
I’ve had these before, too. This isĀ a really, really good one of those. I’m gonna try the spicy egg now. Mike’s already had this ‘cause he gotten invitedĀ to a wedding, but I’ve never tried it before. It’s falling apart on my plate.
Mm. That is really good. It tastes likeĀ a boiled egg with salsa, but I like it. Mm. Oh, wow, that is delicious. Mm. Oh, man. This is…oh, myĀ gosh, this is all delicious food. Alright, let’s try the rendang last. I savedĀ Ā what I imagine is going to beĀ my favorite for last. Okay.
Mm. Mm-hmm. This is phenomenal. Yeah. This is so good. Totally, totally come here. It is pricey, butĀ I would say it is absolutely worth it. I truly,Ā Ā truly do not want to share any of this with Mike. I’m going to do this in the same orderĀ you did, just to keep it consistent.
I don’t know if the vegetablesĀ have spice on their own or ifĀ Ā it’s because I got some of the sambalĀ from the egg, but they’re very good. They are very fresh and crunchy. The bean sproutsĀ and the long beans are really, really good. [I] already messed up. YouĀ tried the corn fitter first.
It’s so, like, light and fluffy. It is. Mm. I see what you mean. It just tastes likeĀ corn and butter that’s been lightly fried,Ā Ā which isn’t a bad thing, butĀ I definitely prefer the lessĀ Ā healthy version that was thoseĀ hash browns with corn in them.
They were so good, but this isĀ really nice, really light and fresh. That’s really good. That is, I think,Ā better than the first one we tried. I’m going to do egg next.Ā I’ve already broken the order,Ā Ā so I’m just going to breakĀ the order in it even more.
That is probably my second favorite. The egg? Yeah, I’m so surprised. It’s so good, right? Mm. The depth of flavor ofĀ the sambal is everything. Obviously, it’s just an egg with sambalĀ on top of it, but it is incredible.
It’s not too spicy. Very, very balanced. It’sĀ got nice acidity to it. That’s really good. Alright, you said mind blown by the sate? Yeah. That is really good. I disagree.Ā Not the best sate I’ve had. Oh, you’re crazy. The sauce is incredible, butĀ there’s something missing, I think.
This is a really good state. Not my favorite. Crazy. To each their own, my love. Mm. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. That rendang is amazing. It is very, very rich. VeryĀ flavorful and super complex. You get the spices first, a littleĀ bit of, like, cinnamon, and,Ā Ā
I guess it’s cinnamon and nutmeg that areĀ in there, and it just feels like a holiday. The spice comes in afterward. Like, theĀ actual chili spice comes in afterward. Oh, it’s so good. Mm. Mm-hmm. I’d say if I had to rate it in order,Ā Ā
It would be rendang, the veggies,Ā the egg, the sate, the corn fritter. I think that’s my hierarchy. I’m not like a museum person,Ā Ā but I like this ‘cause it’s like aĀ living museum. It’s kind of cool. That’ll never make it to Instagram. Yes, it will. You wait andĀ see. I’m growing our audience!
After we finished our incredible meal,Ā Ā we decided to hang out in FatahillahĀ Square and enjoy some live music andĀ Ā watch as people spent time with family andĀ friends, riding bicycles and taking photos. We’re so happy to finally be in Jakarta andĀ have a lot planned for the next few days.

In today’s Indonesia travel vlog, we board a train leaving Bandung and finally arrive in Jakarta for the first time. Jakarta is a city that we’ve been excited to explore since we arrived in Indonesia, and we can’t believe we’re finally here!
After checking out of our first pod hotel in Bandung, we boarded a Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) train and were pleasantly surprised to find that we had booked Premium Economy seats. After a short ride, we arrived in Jakarta, where we checked into our Bobobox pod and set out to explore the surrounding area of Kota Tua.
We ended up at one of Jakarta’s most historic restaurants, Cafe Batavia, where we had delicious local drinks and enjoyed upscale versions of our favorite Indonesian foods, nasi campur meneer and bakwan jagung, before ending the evening at Fatahillah Square.

Indonesia is not only the island of Bali and Java, Indonesia still has the island of Sumatra, the island of Kalimantan, the island of Sulawesi, the island of Nusa Tenggara, the island of Ambon, the island of Papua. Even the island of Madura itself is still part of the island of Java. I think you need 1 year to be in Indonesia exploring from western Indonesia to eastern Indonesia itself. If you understand Indonesia enough, you can stay for a very long time, around 5-8 years in Indonesia. many languages, many tribes and many cultures, but in one national language, namely Indonesian.
Regarding local food, every region in Indonesia has many types of wet and dry cakes. I think you will fall in love with Indonesia as your home to spend the rest of your life in Indonesia.
My word is, never be embarrassed or give up easily on learning Indonesian.
If the restaurant is fancy you probably should take off your hat.
Enjoy Indonesia š®š© guys..
please don't forget to boycott pro israel product guys, thank you very much.
