京都歴史探訪07　南禅寺水路閣

The original plan to construct a tunnel in the mountain behind Nanzen-in, the sub-temple, was no longer possible. The alternative plan was to build an aqueduct in front of Nanzen-in Temple. Nanzenji is ranked higher than the five major temples of the Rinzai sect. Nanzen-in is the birthplace of Nanzen-ji.

Naturally, there was a movement against the construction of this aqueduct. The proponents of Suirokaku construction are Kyoto Prefecture and the Ministry of the Imperial Household. Opponents include Nanzenji Temple and some citizens. The battle ended in favor of the proponents, and Suirokaku was constructed and completed in 1889.

Suirokaku, designed by engineer Sakuro Tanabe, who was a leader in the construction of Lake Biwa Canal, was completed amid opposition movements. The elaborately designed brick exterior has taken on a rich color and blends into the landscape of Nanzenji. The main attraction of Nanzenji is, It has become a spot that is often referred to as Suirokaku. Changes that occur to structures, including dirt, over a long period of time are called “aging effects.”

The answer that engineer Tanabe gave to the opponents was, It was probably this “aging effect”. Access from Kyoto Station From Kyoto Station, take the municipal subway Karasuma Line bound for Kokusai Kaikan. At Karasuma-Oike Station, transfer to the Tozai Line bound for Rokujizo.
