【山形/蔵王温泉】東北屈指の湯けむり温泉街と名物樹氷!2泊3日の夫婦旅。
We are a couple traveling all over Japan. This time we visited Yamagata Prefecture in winter. Hello. This time we came to Zao Onsen. Yamagata Prefecture. This time we will enjoy Zao Onsen ski resort and hot springs for 2 nights and 3 days.
“Zao Onsen Ski Resort” Number of slopes: 14 Number of courses: 12 Longest run distance: 10km Famous for the frost-covered trees on the mountaintop (Commonly known as Snow Monster) The current location is Uwanodai Slope. This ski slope is at the left end of Zao Onsen Ski Resort.
It’s near the hotel we’re staying at. Ride the gondola and aim for the top. We also visited Zao Onsen three summers ago. But I wanted to come in winter and enjoy the hot springs and snowboarding. I was finally able to visit this winter. We will stay for 2 nights this time.
We have already stayed one night. I’ll stay the night again tonight. It’s a 2 night 3 day trip. Yesterday I took a plane from New Chitose Airport and arrived at Sendai Airport. I rented a car from Sendai and came to Zao. It’s now late January.
It seems like there is still not much snow this year. Zao is famous for its frost-covered trees. It is commonly known as the snow monster. It seems to be seen near the top of the mountain. However, there is not much snow this year, so it may not have accumulated much yet.
Well, let’s go to the top of the mountain anyway. Arrived. Beautiful. It’s still halfway up the mountain, but it’s very beautiful. There is something like hoarfrost. That’s hoarfrost. Great. When a lot of hoarfrost overlaps, it evolves into a snow monster. Amazing. There’s a lot of frost. Awesome. Beautiful. First snowboarding of the season.
Let’s go. I was planning on heading to the central slope. But I forgot my snow gloves at the hotel. I only put on inner gloves. As expected of you! Cold. Kenji is a professional at forgetting things. I’ll go back to the hotel to pick it up. There isn’t much snow after all.
It’s tight. We were snowboarding from Uwanodai Slope over there toward the center of the ski resort. Then, to my surprise, I discovered a large open-air bath! We’ve been here before. Surprisingly, this place is right in the middle of a ski resort.
When I came here in the summer, this must have been a parking lot. I came down from there on my snowboard. Amazing! I was surprised. It came out suddenly. This side is the bridge that connects to the central ski slope. It appeared when I was about to go here. Awesome.
It is not open in the winter. Maybe we can see it from here. Wow, I can see it! Amazing, there’s a hot spring. It smells like a hot spring That’s amazing. The hot springs continue to flow even in winter. Beautiful light blue. This is the men’s bath side. Oh, I remember it.
That’s why this bridge is not open except in winter. If you can pass through here, you can see everything. LOL The bridge is closed when the hot springs are open. Awesome. Zao Onsen has a beautiful light blue color. Beautiful color. Great. This is a bridge that can only be crossed in winter.
I never thought I could see the large open-air bath even in winter. After lunch, we will aim for the summit. We have reached the upper part of the mountain. It’s already past noon. We can usually take the ropeway to the top of the mountain. However, the ropeway is currently suspended.
Apparently it broke down due to strong winds 3 days ago. It is currently being inspected, but it may be back in operation soon. That’s why I could only come so far. This is Juhyohara Course. On this course, we can ski while viewing Zao’s famous snow monsters. It’s beautiful. That’s interesting.
Let’s snowboard down here. It’s huge. The world of tree ice. It’s so big. Unfortunately, it’s not the summit. But I’m glad I got to see this. Even with this, there may not be much snow yet. I think there is more snow on the trees at the top of the mountain.
I think the tree is completely hidden. The ropeway may reopen. Good news. Surprisingly, the ropeway to the top of the mountain has resumed operation. Just a while ago. Yay, we can go to the top of the mountain. Arrival at the mountaintop. I got off the ropeway and went up to the terrace.
But it is all white. I can not see anything. White out. LOL Wow, the building is amazing. Wow amazing. Covered by snow. If it’s sunny, you should be able to see the frost-covered trees from here. I can only see nearby trees. It’s white. It’s cold. Zao Ropeway. It’s too cold.
I can only really see the tree in the foreground. It’s covered in snow and it’s amazing. Pure white. Cold. Look at this. This is how frost seems to stick. The trees are also covered like this. Interesting. Beautiful. It’s foggy and visibility is poor.
Visibility is poor, so be careful when descending on your snowboard. It is interesting. Too amazing. It’s big. It’s cold! Well let’s go down the mountain. It’s cold. I’m going down here. Snowboarding finished. It’s past 3 o’clock. We will take a bath in the hot springs and have dinner.
Zao Onsen is a highly acid spring. It seems to be the 2nd most acidic hot spring in Japan. I didn’t know that until now. The hotel also has a hot spring. There is a large bath and an open-air bath. I’m going to take a hot spring bath.
I returned to the hotel and took a hot spring bath. We are staying at “BED’n ONSEN HAMMOND”. This hotel is part of the Takamiya Group. Guests can also bathe in the hot springs at affiliated inns. So we went to the hot springs at a affiliated hotel. Hammond’s public bath is also wonderful.
There is a large bath and an open-air bath. Directly flowing from the source. The quality of the hot springs in Zao Onsen is very good, so it feels good. We’re going to have dinner now. This time we have booked a room without meals.
So I would like to go to a restaurant in the hot spring town. Speaking of Zao, it seems that Genghis Khan originated there. Even the last time I came It wasn’t at Zao Onsen though. Last time we came to Zao, we went to a restaurant called “Shiro”.
This time we will eat Genghis Khan in a hot spring town. Probably the most famous Genghis Khan restaurant in Zao Onsen. I made a reservation at a restaurant called “Robata”. The hot spring town is shining. The hot spring town is filled with the smell of hot springs. There is a shrine here.
There is a public bath at the bottom of the stairs. To get to the shrine, we have to climb a long flight of stairs. Last time I gave up. LOL The stairs are still long. The restaurant is downstairs. It’s my first time walking around Zao Onsen Town at night. Nice atmosphere but cold.
Steam is coming out. Tomorrow I’m planning to go around the public baths. Zao Onsen has 3 public baths. This is “Kamiyu”. (upper bath) The other is “Shimoyu”. (lower bath) In between is “Kawarayu”. I want to go in there. “Robata” We arrived. There is a foot bath at the entrance.
What? There’s no hot water. For some reason there is no hot water. LOL It’s a popular restaurant, so I made a reservation. It looks like they have accommodation facilities as well. It certainly doesn’t look like a restaurant. Let’s eat Genghis Khan. We entered the restaurant. Genghis Khan. Looks really delicious. I’ll drink today.
Cheers. Yummy. Too delicious. The meat has arrived. Looks delicious. It’s a Suffolk breed. Absolutely delicious. Which is better, Hokkaido’s Genghis Khan? We ordered 2 servings. It’s shining brightly. Wow looks delicious. Amazing. It kind of looks like a steak. It’s thick. Looks delicious. You can eat now. Itadakimasu. I’ll eat it.
The sauce looks delicious too. Robata’s original sauce. It’s definitely tasty, I already know this. Because it’s Suffolk. Good. Sweet and tender meat. Wow, it’s really big. Can this be eaten in one bite? You can do it because your mouth is big. The sauce is thick and looks delicious. Good. Very soft.
Suffolk is really delicious. I also ordered horse sashimi. This is horse sashimi from Yamagata Prefecture. Is Yamagata’s horse sashimi famous? I didn’t know. Looks really delicious. This is thigh meat. We could choose between thigh meat and heart. Delicious. This goes well with Japanese sake. Really delicious. Great elasticity. This is La France liqueur.
Yamagata is famous for producing fruits. Looks delicious. Is it sweet? Very sweet. Good. It really tastes like drinking La France. Give me a little bit. It’s like juice. Rich taste. I added one serving of meat. Super delicious. I added it because it’s delicious. I’m back at my inn.
Robata’s Genghis Khan was really tasty. It was really delicious. Suffolk Genghis Khan was the best. There was a viewer who approached us at the ski resort today. We met again by chance at the restaurant. It was the seat next to us. Also, the hotel we were staying at was the same.
What a miracle. It was a miraculous encounter. So we enjoyed talking together at the restaurant. It was a fun time. Moreover, he was from the same Kansai region as us. That’s right, Osaka. It was fun. Today we’re going to take a hot spring bath and sleep.
Tomorrow we will tour the hot spring town of Zao Onsen. I plan to enjoy visiting public baths and walking around. There are 3 public baths, so I don’t know which one to go to. At this hotel, guests receive a free ticket to the public bath. It usually costs 200 yen.
I think I’ll try some public baths since they’re free. Good night. Good morning. This is the 3rd day of 2 nights and 3 days. Today we will take a walk around Zao Onsen Town. Steam is coming out from everywhere. We left the hotel and came to the hot spring town.
There are shops and public baths nearby. I’m going to take a little walk around here today. First of all, I haven’t eaten breakfast yet. Let’s go eat. It’s mochi (rice cake). Yamaguchi mochi shop. Oshiruko (sweet red bean soup with rice cake), freshly made rice cake. Kenji doesn’t like mochi, but is it okay?
Well, I’ll do my best to eat it. I think it’s delicious since it’s freshly made. Looks delicious. Zunda mochi, Kurumi mochi. (Green soybean rice cake, Walnut rice cake) There is also natto mochi. Everything looks delicious. Let’s go in. It’s a nice atmosphere. You can go to-go or eat inside. Let’s go.
We ordered rice cakes! Looks delicious. We ordered the two-colored mochi, which allows to choose 2 types. Contains 3 rice cakes each. Zunda and Kurumi. I also ordered the oshiruko. Absolutely delicious. Also, this is said to be Yamagata’s pickle “Omizuke”. Let’s eat. First, let’s try this restaurant’s specialty, walnut mochi. Amazing.
It stretches a lot. How is it? Akari likes mochi. Super delicious. Chewy. Zunda mochi. So good. I had the impression that zunda is a specialty of Sendai. It’s also a specialty of Yamagata. It’s a rice cake that stretches well! Awesome. It might be because it’s freshly made. Delicious. Gentle sweetness. It’s delicious.
I’ll try it. I think Kenji might be able to eat this too. Yummy. Creamy. Is this walnut? Yeah, I think it’s walnut paste. I think it’s really delicious. It was a rice cake that even Kenji could eat. It’s like a dango. Good. He could eat. I don’t like mochi, but this is delicious.
I think it’s because it’s freshly made. It’s delicious. He seems satisfied. The most delicious rice cake I’ve ever had. It was good. Amazing, the shopkeeper is cracking the walnuts. It was tasty. It was really delicious Kenji, who doesn’t like rice cakes, was very satisfied with the taste. The walnut mochi was especially delicious.
The famous walnut mochi that was recommended by the shop was really delicious. It’s so creamy. So I thought it might contain fresh cream or something. But apparently only sugar and walnuts are used. It was amazingly delicious. I definitely want to eat walnut mochi again when I come to Zao Onsen. It was delicious.
After eating rice cake, we will go to the public bath. Kamiyu public bath. There are 3 public baths at Zao Onsen. This is Kamiyu (upper bath) located at the top. It seems to be the oldest of Zao Onsen. The price is 200 yen. Put the usage fee in the box.
We got bathing tickets at the hotel. Put the ticket in the box as well. Let’s go. We took the hot spring bath. It was hot. LOL The temperature of the upper bath was 43.5℃. It was quite hot. There is no washing area. There is only one bathtub.
Since the bath was fed directly from the source, the hot water continued to overflow from the bathtub. It was too hot so I couldn’t take a long bath. But it felt good. There is snow in winter, so the scenery is different from before.
Last time I was here, it was still hot, so I was sweating when I entered the hot spring. It’s perfect if you come in winter. Feels good. A shrine with too long stairs. I won’t go this time either. LOL There’s snow on the stairs and it’s dangerous. Looks delicious. Tama konnyaku.
This is Zao’s famous tama konnyaku. It’s 100 yen. It is sold at various shops in the hot spring town. Because it smelled delicious. Smells really good. Super delicious. I really like the taste. It was 100 yen. It’s cheap because it’s konnyaku. Good taste. Do you eat? It’s hot. Yummy.
The flavor is well absorbed. It’s spicy. Japanese mustard. LOL Wow, that’s delicious. Perfect when you’re feeling hungry. Freshly made. It was soaking in the pot. hot. The other side is towards Kamiyu. There is Shimoyu public bath at the bottom of the slope. It’s the same here, you can enter for 200 yen.
It seems that Shimoyu is the hottest. 44℃. Today I would like to take a bath at Kawarayu, another public bath. I will not go into Shimoyu. There is also a footbath next to the Shimoyu. The hot springs that spring up here flow into the footbath. It’s coming from here. Whoa, it’s hot!
It’s hot. This is the footbath. This hot spring is Kawaraya, which I visited last time. The public bath is right next door. Therefore, the spring quality is very similar. But Kawaraya has showers. The back of the public bath looks like this. Steam is coming out.
At this Kawarayu public bath, hot springs gush out from beneath your feet. Now, I would like to take a bath in Kawarayu. We can also enter here with a ticket. This bathtub is 43℃. 1 degree lower than Kamiyu. Let’s try. We went to Kawarayu public bath. Kawarayu has a slatted floor.
Hot springs were gushing out from beneath my feet. This is a hot spring that has never been exposed to air. The bathtub was 43°C. I was able to stay in the bath for a longer time than in Kamiyu. There were a lot of yunohana (hot water flowers) floating in the hot spring.
There were more yunohana than in the upper bath. Yunohana is a precipitate of insoluble components from hot springs, and looks like flower petals. I also bought souvenirs related to it. Its name is Yunohana. Too simple. LOL It has small white balls like this inside. This is a ball made by hardening Yunohana.
Yes, it’s made from Zao Onsen itself. Dissolve this in the bath and use. I would like to enjoy Zao Onsen at home too. It seems that the bath at home will be of Zao Onsen quality. I look forward to using it. I bought one more souvenir. It’s alcohol.
Fruit liqueur from Tatenokawa Sake Brewery. I drank this at the Genghis Khan restaurant “Robata” that I visited yesterday. I bought it because it was delicious. Yesterday I drank La France flavor and wild grape flavor. This is peach and cherry flavor. There were several types. There were 5-6 types.
There were other flavors such as apple. We can drink it on the rocks or by diluting it with water or soda. I think it’s an easy-drinking liqueur. It was sold at a liquor store in a hot spring town. This concludes our 2 nights and 3 days trip to Zao Onsen.
This time I was able to enjoy both the ski resort and the hot springs. It was really fulfilling. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t so good yesterday up the mountain. Zao’s famous frost-covered trees, the Snow Monster, were not completely visible. But I was able to experience it a little bit, so it was good.
I think it would look even more beautiful if it was sunny. The view coming down from the top of the mountain on a snowboard was spectacular. Anyway, I would like to visit again on a nice day. Last time I came here around the end of summer, but winter is still recommended.
The hot springs feel great, and the hot spring town is also lively. Probably there are more tourists in winter. I thought the hot spring town was more lively in the winter. You can take the ropeway to the top of the mountain without skiing or snowboarding.
It is also a recommended place for winter sightseeing. Now, we’re heading to Ginzan Onsen. I’m going to introduce Ginzan Onsen in the next video. I’m also looking forward to Ginzan Onsen in winter. Thank you for watching until the end. Please subscribe and support our journey!

Looked a great place to stay. Great food and drink. The rice cakes looked lovely. Thanks!
