下北沢でカメラ片手に喫茶店めぐりを楽しむ
One winter morning, the wind was getting colder. I came to Shimokitazawa. Shimokitazawa Station on the Odakyu Line was built underground in 2013. Actually, I used to go to a university along the Odakyu Line. In the early 2000s, I used to come to Shimokitazawa often. It’s kind of strange to have a station underground…
I have work in the morning, but after that I’m free. After work, I would like to take a walk around Shimokitazawa with my camera in hand. I’m going to work first! Work done! The store I want to go to isn’t open yet, so I’ll take a walk for now.
A new facility called “Mikan Shimokita” will open in front of the station in March 2022. In addition to restaurants and a general store, there are also shared offices. Mikan Shimokita restaurant area. There were many shops with an exotic feel, such as those from Thailand and Vietnam. I arrived in front of the station.
This Peacock (Supermarket) used to exist! nostalgic. Although the area in front of the station has changed, I feel that the atmosphere of the town hasn’t changed all that much from before. As a university student, Shimokitazawa was a “fashionable but friendly town.”
It’s reasonably cluttered and has an atmosphere where you can walk around without feeling overwhelmed. As I was walking, I found a place I used to visit often. Toyo Department Store is a commercial facility that was converted from a garage. There are about 20 unique shops selling used clothing and miscellaneous goods.
I used to come here often when I was in college. I was short on money, so I often just looked at them. In 2019, Shimokitazawa was ranked 2nd in the world’s coolest city ranking*. (*Timeout – The50 coolest neighborhoods in the world)
It is also popular among foreigners as a place where you can buy high-quality vintage items. I saw several foreigners at Toyo Department Store as well. The next place we headed was an antique goods store. Antique items have the impression of being expensive, but this store has a lot of reasonably priced miscellaneous goods.
This is an incense holder tray. It has a natural charm that is unique to wood. There are also many Japanese-style miscellaneous goods such as furoshiki, tenugui, and tableware. Chestnut chopstick rest. cute! I bought a bean pattern furoshiki here before. I still use it.
It’s time for the coffee shop I want to go to to open, so I head there. Arrived at the store! Cafe Negra. This is a store I’ve always wanted to visit. A coffee shop where you can enjoy nostalgic menus such as cream soda and Neapolitan. Head to the entrance at the back.
Memo: There are seats available. Come in. The inside of the store has a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere. It looks like an old coffee shop, but it opened in 2017. The interior of the store is decorated with retro accessories collected by the owner.
I was thinking of ordering a cream soda, but there were so many different kinds that I was confused…! After much deliberation, I ended up with a violet cream soda with a beautiful light purple saki. Fresh cream is on top of the two-tiered vanilla ice cream.
Eat the ice cream little by little, being careful not to break it. I don’t usually drink cream soda because I don’t like cold drinks. But on this day, I had decided to drink cream soda, so I wore heattech (clothes made of warm material).
The violet flowers blooming at the edge of the glass are cute. I came here several times, but it was so crowded that I couldn’t get in. I was so happy that I could finally come this time!
There’s another coffee shop I’d like to go to, but I decided to take a short walk to fill my stomach. First, let’s go see the new facility built above Shimokitazawa Station. Shimo Kita Ekiue is a facility that opened above Shimokitazawa Station in November 2013. It contains cafes and restaurants.
As with Mikan Shimokita, new facilities have increased around the station. The illustrations on the wall were cute. More walks. Village Vanguard, nostalgic! ! A constant sense of chaos. We have a wide variety of products, from items that would make good gifts to interesting goods.
Just looking at it was fun, so I often came here to kill time during meetings. What’s this? Will the bath smell like melon soda? There are also parfait-scented bath salts. I’m walking around in circles because I don’t know where to exit. (I have a very bad sense of direction) There was an exit!
Now, it’s time to head to the coffee shop! As if guided by the faint sound of jazz, I headed to the second floor. I’m looking forward to this as it’s a store I’ve always wanted to visit! The moment you open the door and enter the store, you feel like you’re surrounded by music.
Due to copyright reasons, I will include another BGM from here on. Jazz Cafe Masako is a coffee shop that opened in 1953. It closed in 2009 due to the redevelopment of Shimokitazawa. In 2020, this store was opened in a new format by former Masako staff.
The sound equipment and furniture used at the previous Masako are said to be used. Great speakers and lots of records. You can feel the history of the store. After waiting for a while while reading a book, the first thing that was brought to me was coffee.
And an egg sandwich was also brought out. It looks delicious while setting up to take a photo ! The cup is cute! I want to eat it quickly, so I take a quick photo. Well then, let’s have it!
Actually, my husband (who loves jazz) went to the old Masako when he was a college student. He said of Masako, “It’s an old store with big speakers…” I’m sure the ones in the store now are the speakers from that time.
I wonder if my husband, who was a university student, also heard the same sounds. I didn’t say what I thought about the taste. Both the coffee and the egg sandwich were delicious 🙂 I read after dinner. Jazz music continues to be played at a fairly loud volume inside the store.
I don’t like restaurants with loud background music, but the music I hear at Masako doesn’t seem too loud. When I said this to my husband after I got home, he said, “It’s not because the speakers are good.” I see.
The book I brought to fully enjoy the atmosphere of Shimokitazawa was “Moshi Moshi Shimokitazawa” Author: Yoshimoto Banana Yoshimoto Banana’s writing has the comfort of being soaked in warm water ♨︎ Delicious coffee, soothing music, and reading. It was the best time. The sun is starting to set, so I head home.
The front of the station is still under construction. Once the construction is finished, the scenery around the station will probably change again. I want things that have been around for a long time to remain as they are.
On the other hand, I also find the way it changes, a mixture of nostalgia and newness, appealing. So that’s it for today. See you on our next walk.
