【京都散歩】北大路・西陣|モダン建築祭|人気&隠れ家カフェ|老舗和菓子店
Hello walking around Kyoto . This time, we will take a walk around Kitaoji and Nishijin while visiting the architecture exhibited at the Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival. The first place I visited was “Japan Evangelical Lutheran Kamogawa Church.” It has a cute impression with its red tiled roof and cream colored walls.
This church, with its impressive rose windows and arched windows, is a Vories building built in 1954. The synagogue is said to have been designed in the image of Noah’s Ark, and has an impressive high truss ceiling. The light and breeze from the window makes you feel calm.
The big fir tree seems to be looking forward to Christmas Day. Although it was a simple church, it had a quiet and warm appearance. I bother you. The next place we visited was the Kyoto Resurrection Church, located along Kitaoji. Its symbol is the towering bell tower, which attracts attention from the street.
This is also a Vories building built in 1935. The pointed arch is Gothic and solid. I’ll come inside. The ceiling is made of wood and has a warm yet sacred atmosphere. The stained glass above the altar is beautiful with the image of the Lord Jesus Christ emerging from the fine workmanship.
The spire arch windows are decorated with beautiful tracery. Each window had a different stained glass cross with a different design. It is said to be used in baptism ceremonies. It was a solid, traditional church building. I bother you.
The “Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival” is an event where modern architecture that has been carefully preserved in Kyoto is specially exhibited once a year. It began in 2022 as a project to commemorate the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ relocation to Kyoto.
Even outside the Kitaoji area, where we visited this time, you can enjoy and experience the inside of buildings that are usually closed to the public. Continue your walk in the Kitaoji area. Honpo-ji Temple is also famous for its cherry blossom viewing in spring.
It is also famous as the filming location for NHK BS’s “Secret Pleasures of Kyoto People” ♪ (I loved this drama ☺ I would like to visit in the spring next time) The cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are beautiful . I came to Ogawa-dori Street, which has a typical Kyoto atmosphere.
It is a quiet area where facilities related to Omotesenke and Urasenke are lined up. This is “Kyoan” from Urasenke school. There are also shops related to tea ceremony. On the right side is the Omotesenke school “Fushian”. You’ve found the store you’re looking for. “Kyoto Confectionery Chef Tawaraya Yoshitomi.”
This is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1755 (Horeki 5). “Charon Tawaraya” is quietly located next to the shop. Go through the narrow alley on the right side of the store and visit Charon.
This also appeared in “Secret Pleasures of Kyoto People” as the restaurant where the heroine is having tea.☺Today, let’s enjoy the tea on the terrace while admiring the autumn leaves . Make a matcha set. “Unryu” is a famous confectionery. Seasonal fresh sweets. The large red bean filling is moist. Sweetness is modest.
It goes well with matcha and has a hearty feel. It was very delicious. I also want to buy some souvenirs, so I will also visit the store. It’s great to be able to feel the spring, summer, fall and winter with Japanese sweets. I bought some seasonal dried sweets and wheat gluten sweets.
All of them are cute, and I think I bought a little too much… Now, let’s walk towards Nishijin. This is a popular soba restaurant in Nishijin. We arrived at our destination for today, Sarasa Nishijin. At the entrance, there is a Karakafu roof. It has an impressive storefront that looks like a movie set.
This is Fujimori-yu, a public bath that was built over 80 years ago, and has been renovated. Excuse me, Once inside, you can feel the atmosphere of a former public bath everywhere. It seems that the bathtub from the public bath still remains under the floor of the seat in the back.
The wall tiles are Japanese majolica tiles. It has uneven reliefs, making it look like a kaleidoscope. It is an exquisite beauty. It has an atrium structure and is reminiscent of a former public bath. Light streams in from the skylight, creating a sense of openness. I ordered “Turkish rice” and “Fried chicken lunch”.
Turkish rice. It seems to be a popular menu item. Goes well with a sweet sauce. It’s also nice to be able to enjoy a variety of flavors in one dish. Fried chicken lunch. I chose homemade sweet soy sauce.
Crispy on the outside, moist and juicy on the inside. The taste is strong and rich. I enjoyed the retro atmosphere and was able to relax. It was delicious, thank you for the meal! Now that your stomach is full, let’s take a stroll around the Nishijin area.
“Fujimori Dormitory” In ancient times, this townhouse was used as a student dormitory. It seems that the vacant house is being used as an atelier and a handmade shop. This seems to be a popular spot where people come from far and wide.
It’s nice to have an elegant space where you can enjoy the inconvenience. I will stop by next time! Although Nishijin is not as flashy as Kyoto’s popular sightseeing spots, it is still a fun area to walk through the alleys of. It makes you feel that “Kyoto is here!”
Young people are opening new shops, and the whole town is becoming more attractive. “Jofukuji-dori” is a cobblestone road with many townhouses remaining. It once prospered as the center of Nishijin, and is lined with quaint buildings. This area has a quiet atmosphere and is a hidden spot where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll.
“Orinasukan” is an art museum that uses the original building from 1933 as it is. This area is recommended for those who want to enjoy walking around town. The walls of Honryu-ji Temple are made of tiles embedded between clay walls. It creates a rustic atmosphere. Now, let’s head to the hidden cafe.
There was! ! The mailbox says “Nobara Coffee”. Let’s continue down this narrow alley. It is said to be one of the most difficult-to-locate cafes in Kyoto. Excitedly, I opened the double door and … The inside of the shop is decorated with beautiful antique items. A nostalgic space is spreading.
I ordered coffee, red apple, and rice flour pound cake. I enjoyed the rich coffee and simple cake. I was able to escape from the hustle and bustle outside and enjoy a relaxing cafe in a calm interior. I would like to visit again… Thank you for watching until the end.
