AVIGNON 🇫🇷⛪️🌞WALKING TOUR Video dans la Cité des Papes ⚜️PROVENCE SUD de la FRANCE [4K]
Highlights To Avignon city center The ramparts of Avignon are the fortifications surrounding the ancient town of Avignon in the Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It is one of the rare French towns to have preserved all of its ramparts.
With its historic center, made up of the Palais des Papes, the episcopal complex and the Pont d’Avignon, it has been classified as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Les remparts et leurs abords font également l’objet de plusieurs classements au titre des monuments historiques, par le ministère de la culture, en 1906, 1914, 1915, 1933 et 19371. Walking in old city center Avignon, a city full of riches, as we saw during a walk in the old city center
The historic center still gives the impression of walking several centuries back in time. We love it when we just pass through these narrow streets, but on a daily basis when we live there, it can’t be easy. Imagine, just to park, or to have something other than someone opposite…
The intramuros city, the one which is fortified by solid ramparts, is quite small, in comparison with the Avignon metropolitan area. Republic street Rue de la Ré, as the Avignon residents call it, is the largest of Avignon’s three main arteries, built within the walls during the 19th century.
It’s lunch time, we’re going to eat in this brasserie along Place de l’Horloge Clock Square “The most Italian of Avignon’s facades.” Very beautiful work dating from 1615. Palace of the Popes Residence of the sovereign pontiffs of the 14th century, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We are in the middle of winter, it is the low season but it allows you to quietly enjoy the city and relax. Walking to the garden of the doms Garden of the Doms (Rocher des Doms)
Green public garden on top of a hill with a pond, café and views of the river & countryside. Old photos of artists Avignon Bridge The Saint Bénezet bridge, built from the 12th century and a major witness to the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to its famous song.
The Pont d’Avignon, the most famous in the world, is a legendary bridge. According to legend, it was in 1177 that a young shepherd called Bénézet, claiming to be sent from God, came to Avignon to build a bridge over the Rhône. Less than ten years later, the bridge was usable.
The fountain in the park makes the atmosphere very soothing and relaxing, we stop for a few minutes to enjoy. « Notre Dame des Doms d’Avignon » 12th century cathedral crowned by golden statue of the Virgin Mary, with tombs of the popes of Avignon. Merchant street
Rue des Marchands allows for a pleasant walk in a very commercial area of Avignon. Place Carnot Small square where St Peter’s Basilica sits Rue des Fourbisseurs Shopping street Gourmet Break Artisanal production of Provencal specialties: biscuits, caramels, nougats, calissons, candied fruits, almonds…. Rue Saint-Agricol
Like Rue Joseph Vernet, Rue Saint-Agricol is probably one of the most chic streets in Avignon. They are both lined with fashion boutiques. Window display of a French bakery and pastry shop. Provençal pastries such as the Gateau des Rois on the occasion of Epiphany.
Return to the main street “Rue de la République” to end our walking tour of Avignon, the city of the Popes in the South of France. It’s 3 p.m., it was quite cold today but it was a very pleasant walking tour. We are now back to warm up 😊
We also need to find where we parked the car 😅 Tell me in the comments if you have ever had to look for your car because you no longer know where you parked it 🤣
