Annual event held once a year. Limited to 200 people. Adults: ¥25,000 Students: ¥23,000 Children: ¥13,000 Although it was a capacity-limited event, there were empty seats even on the day of boarding. On the other hand, some people had reserved seats six months in advance.
After considering whether to participate for over four hours, I applied at Ogasawara Kaiun’s office on Chichijima. Credit card payment is accepted. Students and discount applicants, please pay attention. “You need to submit a paper copy of your ID.” “Please ask the locals to print it for you.”
Ogasawara Kaiun presented a quest more difficult than a borrowed competition. There is no printer in this office. It seems that presenting a student ID is not enough; printing is required for operational companies. Many student discounts only require presentation, but printing is required?? Photography and PDF saving are not supported.
“I don’t even know where I can print.” I was told that I had to find someone who could print on this remote island. This kind of case was the first time in my life. When I was shopping at the JA on Chichijima, I consulted with a man who was working at the register.
He consulted with his boss and agreed to print it. Thank you very much. By the way, I spent over ¥10,000 at this store during my stay on Chichijima. I’ll make sure to write about these things when this island appears in my manga. There is much to learn from local coverage.
The passion fruit sweets at the JA on Chichijima were very delicious, so I’ll promote them. Departure from the port on Chichijima, the closest to Tokyo’s Iwo Island, is at 6:00 p.m. The sea where you can’t see mainland Japan or any islands. Tokyo’s Iwo Island and annual flower offering.
(Comparison) Iwo Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. Southern Iwo Island in Tokyo. Restricted area for civilians. Northern Iwo Island in Tokyo. June 30th. Temperature 32 degrees Celsius. Sea temperature 30 degrees Celsius. Hotter than being in Singapore… Japan’s summer is tougher than Singapore’s…
The physical stamina of the Self-Defense Force members working on Iwo Island seems quite high. For this tour, the participation rate of members of birdwatching clubs from all over Japan and people who love birds is high. Originally, I only planned to visit Chichijima and Hahajima.
While sailing from Tokyo Terminal to Chichijima, I talked to a man on the ferry deck. We met for the first time. He came with his friend to discover rare birds inhabiting Southern Iwo Island.
He’s a very powerful person who has been stationed abroad and has even been to the village of Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture by yacht. Yet, he had a dignified and polite demeanor. Even after retiring, the atmosphere of a “high-skilled superior” still remained.
That was the first time I learned that this cruise around the three Iwo Islands only happens once a year. It’s unlikely for me, who usually lives in Singapore, to come here at the end of June again. Because it coincides with the annual event on the inhabited islands in Singapore.
By the way, I don’t have the data from the brochure of the Iwo Island cruise, so I can’t guarantee its accuracy. I bought ramune fu from a port I used when climbing Mt. Nokogiri in Chiba. The rest might have been bought in Hiroshima… There are a lot of sake bottles, huh?
Onboard information desk and introduction booth for the Ogasawara Islands. It’s a less crowded time. Now’s the chance to have a meal. Alright, let’s pour curry roux again. I think I bought this around Wakayama Prefecture. It’s butterfly pea curry. Pretty good. In Japan, I can only get it in Tengu.
There was a similar curry at a cafe in the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. Since the cafe had blue lighting, the true color of the rice was also unclear. The sea and sandy beach. I did not use the restaurant. Finally, something yellow came out of the bag.
Come to think of it, the clothes also felt like butterfly pea. About the schedule for the Iwo-islands cruise.
It was scheduled to assemble at 18:00 at the Futami Port of Hashima Island. However, boarding starts at 18:20. I don’t understand why they need to make us wait for 20 minutes. (I don’t think there was any meaning to it)
The benches at the port were full, and it was hot standing outside, so I felt that people who were close to their accommodations could come at the time of boarding and it would be enough.
I’ve been touring inhabited islands all over Japan, so there was plenty of local food. That’s why I didn’t eat at the restaurant here. This ferry has a microwave and hot water available. The shower room had body soap provided, but I used my own supplies.
I don’t recommend the Ogasawara Maru for those who get seasick easily. I’ve been to about 250 islands in Japan by the time of this video post, but this ferry was the only one that made me sick.
I also felt unwell on the ferry to Hachijojima, so I thought this area of the sea might not agree with my body. For those accustomed to the calm waves of the Seto Inland Sea or Singapore, this area and Yonaguni Island may cause considerable seasickness.
Don’t forget to prevent hair damage. I couldn’t even comb through it after an hour. Many people are standby an hour before arrival. There were even some two hours before. In the opening scenes of this video on Minami-Iwo island, there was little gas, but it increased quickly.
Since the purpose of boarding varies for each person, those focused on filming prioritize UV protection. By the way, it’s very hot. For those concerned about skin issues, island hopping may not be suitable to begin with. It’s a humid environment where pores are likely to open up.
I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said that for each island I’ve visited, my skin has gained more spots and wrinkles. Iwo island. In fact, there are Self-Defense Force personnel on top of the hill. Photography is prohibited at the SDF base. This area is without a base, so I’m able to film
The currents around here are swift, and people reportedly can’t make any headway even when swimming. This ferry has great speed and horsepower. Steam is rising. Iwo island (Iō-tō) was called “Volcano Island” when discovered by a Spanish ship in the mid-16th century.
Later, when the island was confirmed by a British expedition in the late 18th century, it was named “Sulfur Island.” The incorporation of this island into Japanese territory was in September 1891. It is currently a Self-Defense Force base and off-limits to the general public, but there were originally residents.
In June 1889, residents of Hahajima (Mr. Tanaka) came to this island for shark capture and sulfur collection. Full-scale sulfur mining began in 1892, followed by agriculture becoming the main industry. Sugar cane, coconuts, and lemongrass were specialty products. In 1940, the population was 1,051 on Iwo island and 103 on North Iwo island.
The Pacific War broke out on December 8, 1941. In 1944, residents of both islands were forcibly evacuated. The Japanese government did not prepare new resettlement locations. Even after the war, residents of North Iwo island and Iwo island are not allowed to return to these islands.
In Singapore, many residents of inhabited islands were relocated to the main island by government order. It seems that the reasons were not just war-related, but also factors like limited land and defense and infrastructure needs. The only inhabited island accessible to the general public in Singapore is Pulau Ubin.
Mount Suribachi is also known as “Pipe Mountain.” Its elevation is about 170m. At the summit are the “Japan War Dead Commemorative Monument,” “Special Attack Corps Memorial,” and “Marines Landing Memorial,” among others. By the way, these chrysanthemums are distributed to passengers for offering. Participation in offering flowers is optional. I participated.
I waited for over an hour after these chrysanthemums were distributed before the actual offering began. It was very long. There are shipwrecks, but even with zooming in, I couldn’t tell which one it was. Offering of flowers. North Iwo island The highest elevation is 792m.
I used an iPhone 12 Pro. It was difficult to film despite the presence of rare birds. People around me are talking about birds. It seems that bringing a high-performance telescope costing over 1 million yen is recommended on this island.
This island was once home to settlers from Hahajima who built settlements and lived here. As you can see, most of the island is cliffs. Settlements existed only on a small flat land. Some houses still remain today, but they are completely unrecognizable with the iPhone 12 Pro. Passengers also brought binoculars.
Near the 700m elevation of Sakaki-ga-mine is a vast flat area called “Sanmantsubo,” which was used as a pasture. Like Minami Iwo island, it’s a beautiful island. You can understand why one might want to move here. This island is also a volcanic island.
Since I’m from Kagoshima Prefecture, living on a volcanic island doesn’t feel strange to me, but it surprises people from Singapore. In March 2022, eruptions and volcanic smoke were confirmed on this island. The smoke reportedly reached a height of about 7 km.
This island is truly deserving of being called the “lonely island in the remote sea.” I’m deeply fascinated by the geological layers and caves here. By the way, while Mr. Tanaka led the expedition to Iwo Jima, Mr. Ishino led the one to this island.
There was a police station here at the time, and police officers were stationed. Three stone axes discovered by these police officers were donated to the University of Tokyo at the time, and the Ishino site was discovered during excavations on this island.
In 1952, this island came under U.S. military administration under the San Francisco Treaty. At its peak, the population on this island exceeded 220 people. In 1968, this island was returned to Japan from the United States, but it remains uninhabited to this day. The Ishino site contains megaliths with carved drawings and stone circles.
In July 1993, two researchers went missing during their lunch break and were found dead at sea. As a result, the investigation remains suspended to this day. The Ishino site is approximately 50m long and 20m wide.
What’s interesting is that the results of the investigation show similarities between the graves on this site and those in the distant Ryukyu Islands. Since there still seems to be the remains of an elementary school on this island, I have a desire to land here.
I bought this book on the ferry. “Iwo Jima”. It’s a book that gathers testimonies from witnesses on the island through face-to-face interviews conducted over a long period. Very intriguing book. When I returned to the lower deck, there was a female teacher performing a skit using this sheet. Japanese female teacher “Benkei.”
Surrounding female teachers: “Hahaha” The Ogasawara Islands are peaceful today as well.
