Speaking of Zao in winter, the most important thing that comes to mind is the snow monster “Juhyo”.I hadn’t skied in a long time, so I had given up on seeing it. However, when I learned that there was a snowmobile tour, I decided to participate with great anticipation!

The price of a snowmobile is around 40 million yen to 100 million yen. Fuel consumption is like 2-4km/L. I don’t have many opportunities to ride it. This ski resort is the highest in the prefecture and has the best snow quality, and is conveniently located an hour and a half from Sendai.
It’s packed with activities you can’t find anywhere else, such as “touring through frost-covered trees,” “backcountry,” “snowshoe trekking,” and “terrain parks.” It’s almost time to leave. The tour is held twice in the morning and in the afternoon. Each takes about 2 hours.
We are the standard car number 2. In a deluxe car, you will have a forward-facing seat and a reserved seat. The price is also a little high. The driver/guide will explain the precautions. Apparently the towel hanging above is for wiping the windows if they fog up.
Here we go! I’m leaving. Standard car No. 1 departs first, climbing from 1,100m to around 1,700m above sea level . Five snowmobiles follow behind them. He said it was the first time this season that all vehicles were in attendance. The people who saw us off were the aforementioned “goggle dog” and the staff.
Skiers are waiting for the snowmobile to pass by. Some people will wave if you wave. Go up the slope. The staff will see you off here as well. We left the slope and entered an area that cannot be reached by lift. The vehicle in front of me is hazy with snow and smoke.
By the time the snowmobile enters the “Zao Echo Line” and heads higher, the scenery outside is pure white and you can’t see anything! Will I be able to go outside? Arrived at the frost-covered plain! For the first time, we will enjoy appreciating the frost-covered trees for about 15 minutes.
Oh! The scenery is pure white! It seems like you’re in a place like this, but you can’t see anything because of the whiteout. I feel like my ears are going to be torn off by the wind.
It’s different than I imagined, but it’s fun and exciting. A flock of “snow monsters” stands out from the pure white scenery. It’s not a good omen, but I’d like to see this shot from the movie “Hakkoda Mountains”. There may be something similar in terms of environment.
The guide is very busy. He also creates a route for us to view and explains the route. If you deviate from the route, you can easily get buried up to your waist in snow.
Juhyō refers to ice attached to the Aomori pine tree, and its characteristic feature is that the ice extends long downwind. This is commonly called “shrimp tail.” The guide took the photo.

Although the weather was not good, we were able to have a valuable experience. The staff was kind and I felt comfortable participating in the tour. It seems that there are other courses available, so next time I will check the weather forecast and try it.
